Bellflower was a small farming community located in southeastern Kern County, California. It was founded by Captain John Sutter and his wife Hilda on July 24, 1847 as the Rancho San Pedro de Bellflower. The town site was north of present-day Bellflower and south of Bakersfield. The first post office operated in Bellflower from October 15, 1849 to May 1, 1850. In 1851 the town site was moved to its current location. The first school in Bellflower was built in 1852. A new school building was built in 1903 and used until 1955 when it went through an extensive remodeling that increased its seating capacity to over 400 people; it is now known as the John Sutter Community Center. In 1907 the Southern Pacific Railway began construction of a line from Bakersfield to Los Angeles via Temecula and Chico; this line called for the relocation of the bellflowers from their original farm locations east of Temecula into what is now southeastern Kern County. The railroad completed its project in 1908 and announced that it would move the bellflowers westward along its tracks to their new location at present-day Bellflower.
