The first settlers were George and Elizabeth Wagoner, who arrived from Illinois on October 25, 1850. From 1861 to 1865, Bellflower was part of the Union Army during the American Civil War. In February 1924, President Calvin Coolidge signed legislation that changed the name of Valentine’s Valley to honor General James J. “Jimmie” Wilson after he had been elected president that year. On March 6, 1925, a fire started near the intersection of Highways 99 and 100 and quickly grew out of control; by 10 am it had swept through several blocks including most of downtown Bellflower and destroyed nearly all the businesses along both streets combined. Over one hundred people were killed or injured in what became known as "the Great Fire of 1925". After years of litigation and rebuilding efforts, including the creation of a municipal airport nearby (now Airport Boulevard), Bellflower's economy has slowly recovered over time. The town was platted on October 10, 1892 by Dr. Wm. H. Bell and his brother-in-law, A.J. Devine from land that they leased from George Cripe and Joseph Sutter for $1 per acre (the lease ran until 1920). The first post office in Bellflower opened on November 12, 1892; it was called "New Hope".
