On July 2nd 1870 Samuel Morse donated 1 acre (0.40 hectare) of his property adjacent to present day Santa Fe Boulevard to establish a school in honor of his father Alfred Vail who had been killed earlier that year while working on a wagon train travelling from New York City to points southward including San Francisco Bay Area via Butte Pass and Salinas Valley In 1886 local rancher Manuel Nieto offered 400 acres (16 hectares) near present-day downtown for streetcar line construction between Fresno and Stockton which became known as "Nieto's Trail." A depot and tracks were built thereon and passenger service started on January 10th 1895 making it one of earliest streetcar services in North America Various businesses took up residence around Depot Square during this time including sawmill run by Everson & Laney Mills lumberyards; blacksmith shop; gas station; grocery store; movie theater; millinery shop etc., but all disappeared by World War II when almost all native Americanowned businesses were destroyed or converted into military barracks .
