The Belmont Army Depot was first activated on December 7, 1941 when the Belmont Naval Air Station became an Army airfield. The depot was now responsible for the storage and distribution of military equipment and supplies to various installations throughout California. On November 1, 1944, the Belmont Army Depot was renamed the United StatesArmy Belmont Field Unit after General Dwight D. Eisenhower's Headquarters First Army Area Command & Service Force in reaction to the city's hosting of a large Allied invasion force. With World War II drawing to a close, many military units were disbanded or moved away from San Francisco County due to budgetary limitations. However, with increasing needs for troops in peacetime, the USAAF reaffirmed its commitment to stationed at Belem Field on October 1st 1955 until it closed on September 30th 1958 as part of Major reductions in USAF manpower across all components during the postwar period. The Belem Field closure left much unused Corps land undeveloped and led directly to redevelopment of nearby neighborhoods such as Hunters Point Shipyard and Alameda Naval Shipyard including present day Hunters Point Marine Terminal which is located adjacent to theBelmont Army Depot site today (see map).

Belmont is a small town located in the east San Bernardino County, California. The population was 1,814 as of the 2010 census. It was founded in 1892 by James Belmont and his wife Anna Sullivan. In 1924, it became part of the new city of Riverside. Riverside annexed Belmont in 1961, and the town lost its charter (along with most other incorporated municipalities) on November 3, 1961. The lastresident left the town on December 14th that year when it became an unincorporated community within Riverside County. Belmont's name comes from Anna Sullivan's father who named their farm "Belmont" after himself and his first wife Belle Island which he bought near Long Beach City Limits in 1868 for $1,500 (). James Belmont had been born at Belle Isle about 1847 and immigrated to America at age 15 years old with his parents John and Ann (née Crocker).
