The Coast Guard has been serving the community of Belmont, California for more than 120 years. The service is essential to providing law and order in the area and responding to emergencies. The Coast Guard mission is to provide safe and secure waters for our citizens, fishing enthusiasts, boaters, and other users. Belmont was created in 1887 when three local men donated land to the Coast Guard for its new station. In 1916, a second station was built onshore and the name was changed to Belmont Station. In 1970, a helicopter hangar was added to make it easier for Coast Guardsmen to respond during emergencies. Today, the Coast Guard operates six stations in San Diego County: Cliffs Point Light Station; Corona del Mar; Imperial Beach; North County Harbor; Seaside Heights; and Sismo Lighthouse. In addition there are two detachments stationed overseas-the United States Embassy detachment in London England and HM Customs detachment at Helmand Province Afghanistan. The CG also has an auxiliary unit known as Air Support Command (ASC) which provides airlift support for coastal operations ashore including search & rescue missions as well as drug interdiction/counterdrug operations aboard vessels upwind from shorelines

Belmont (formerly Hercules) County, California was founded on May 6, 1850, by Captain George Belmont and his party of pioneers. The area that now includes Belmont was part of the Mexican territory of Alta California. The first post office in the area was at San Simeon. On January 1, 1851, the first town in this county was established at what is now known as Centerville. The settlement began to grow rapidly due to the discovery of gold in nearby Tomales and Nevada counties. By 1858, over 150 citizens had joined Captain George Belmont in establishing a new town near present-day Centerville. This growth continued until December 31st, 1860 when Captains George Waddell and John Clements abandoned their towns because they found no gold or other minerals worth exploring in this region. On January 1st, 1861, Centerville became the second town in this county when it merged with neighboring Dunsmuir into one small town. As Centerville grew more popular due to its peaceful atmosphere and great location for agriculture and business development, other towns within Belmont County started to merge into it as well over time including Atherton on February 15th 1865; Glen Ellen on November 4th 1868; Murphysboro on May 10th 1870; North Sumner on October 17th 1872; East Palo Alto on January 3rd 1895; and final merger onto one common name on December 31st 1910 with Dunsmuirtown
Belmont was incorporated as a city in 1892. It became a part of the greater Los Angeles area on January 1, 1911. The population of Belmont peaked at over 100,000 in 1920 and decreased to about 60,000 by 1940. However, the city’s population continued to grow slowly until it reached its current size of 38,000 in 1990.
