The town was named for Mount Belmont, which is located just north of the town. The first post office in Belmont opened in 1870. The town became an incorporated city in 1911. In 1925, it merged with nearby Stockton to form the new City of Stockton. Belmont is a small town in western Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 7,844 at the 2010 census. It is located on the corner of Belmont Avenue and Webb Street. Belmont was founded by pioneers in 1849 as a stagecoach stop on the Butterfield Overland Mail route from Sacramento to Stockton. The town grew quickly due to its convenient location and its strong agricultural economy. In 1912, it became an incorporated town with a population of 12 residents. The post office closed in 1951 but the community continued to grow until it had a total population of 21,521 in 2001. The city of San Jose annexed Belmont in 1978; however, the two towns have remained separate municipalities since then. In 2002, voters passed Measure A which would allow for annexation by San Jose if the city's population reached 25% of Belmont's total Population within five years; however, this did not happen because San Jose's population only reached 24%. In recent years, some residents have voiced concerns about how much economic development has taken place outside of their town boundaries and what that might mean for their communities' future. Additionally, there are proposals being made to rename Belmont after local heroes such as World War II veteran Phil Kessel or former NFL player Ozzie Newsome.
