Belmont, California is a town located in Contra Costa County, California on the Pacific Coast. The population was 22,859 at the 2010 census. Belmont is one of the most significant coffee towns in the United States and has been roasted by some of the largest roasters in the world. These roasters have included Peet's Coffee, Starbucks, and Dunkin' Donuts. The first coffee beans to be roasted in Belmont were from Mexico City. The beans were brought over by José Andrés Durán who ran a small coffee plantation near Belmont. In 1837, John Thornton began selling coffee from his property on San Pablo Avenue. Thornton's Coffee Roasters was founded in 1845 by Jethro Tullock and others in partnership with Wm Henson and Samuel Morse. In 1865, George Peet opened his first store in what is now known as downtown Belmont. At that time Peet was one of the most important roasters in America due to his production of French press coffees which became popular during that period. In 1928, John Fenton started importing Brazilian cherries into North America and began exporting Brazilian-roasted coffee products back to Brazil under thelabel "Fenton's". However, it would not be until 1960 when Fenton created their own brand - Peruvian Bischoff - which allowed for international sales without having to obtain a distribution license from Brazil or Peru

Belmont is one of the oldest continuously inhabited areas in California. The area was first settled by the Tongva people, who named it after their own home village of Belmont on the San Gabriel Mountains. The area was later explored and claimed by Spain, and in 1821, Mexico became a part of the United States. In 1846, following the Mexican-American War, California became a territory of the United States and was then divided into two parts: Alta California (the higher regions) and Baja California (the lower regions). The region that includes Belmont was part of Alta California. In 1861, Don José Altamirano bought land east of downtown San Francisco from Juan Bautista Carrillo for $3 million. He began to build what would become Altamirano's Rancho Santa Cruz de los Andes—named for his then-relationship with Diego Rivera, leader of Mexico's revolution against Spanish rule—and opened it up to settlement in 1863. The first coffee crop grown here was planted in 1865 by Rufus Hunt with assistance from Antonio Zamora and others associated with Carrillo's rancho. Hunt is credited with developing modern farming methods here; his Experimental Station No. 1 remains a historical landmark today across from Altamirano Park on State Route 101 near downtown Belmont. In 1868–69 John Muir visited Belmont during his " Yosemite Expedition" and wrote about it in an article entitled "A Tour through Western Yosemite". This trip won Muir fame as one of America's most noted naturalists at the time. In 1870 he entered into partnership with Valentine Davenport to develop a railroad through Yosemite National Park from Carbondale down to Hetch Hetchy Valley below Mariposa Pass; this venture failed but led to their founding of Davenport & Muir Incorporated four years later which continues operations today as one of America’s largest forest companies

In 1914 he donated land for what would become Stanford University. The belmont Civic Center, built in 1927 on part of his estate, remains one of Stanford's most iconic buildings today.

Belmont is a small city in northern California located on the north shore of San Francisco Bay. The population was 31,545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco-Oakland-Hayward, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name means "beautiful mountain" in Spanish and Belmont was first settled by settlers from Mexico in 1836. The city became a rail center during the late 1800s and early 1900s due to its location on the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Railway. In 1906, following World War I, Belmont became one of four cities in California to secede from the state due to their support for prohibition. The city has been steadily growing since then and now anchors a largely middle-class community east of downtown San Francisco. Belmont's rich history can be traced back to its earliest days as a small Mexican settlement with only three families living there in 1836: José Maria García de la Vega, Antonio Garza y Montoya, and Manuel Michelino Rojas.
