Belmont is a small city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 21,812 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the city of San Bernardino and is bordered by Ontario to the east and west, and El Monte to the north. Belmont was first settled in 1855 by brothers Charles Hirschi and George Belmont, who named it for their father's home built in 1852 on land they had bought from Don Carlos Vallejo. In 1871, James Waddell purchased part ofbelmont from the Hirschis. The town was incorporated on December 3, 1876. It became an unincorporated community when its incorporation was revoked by county commissioners because it did not have a post office. Belmont experienced rapid growth during World War II due to its proximity to ammunition production sites around San Bernardino County. More than 20 businesses were founded in Belmont during World War II; 11 of these survive today including seven that are still operating: Bendix Aviation Services Inc., BELNU Steel Co., Blue Diamond Tire & Rubber Co., Casa Grande Pizza Inc., Computer Associates International Inc., Del Mar Speedway (now known as Auto Club Speedway) and First National Bank (now HSBC USA). The war-time economy slowed after hostilities ceased but some businesses reopened; such as Radio Shack which reopened after being closed during wartime because of prohibition laws. Along with other cities near Los Angeles County experiencing significant growth following World War II, Belmont entered into what has been called "the third golden age" of its history coinciding with strong economic opportunities following Disraeli's coronation as British Prime Minister in 1922 and technological advances associated with radio broadcasting throughout most of America beginning in about 1925/26 helped make Belmond one of "America's Top 10 Cities for Business." In recent years there has been progress made however housing prices have increased much more rapidly than job opportunities or economic development opportunities resulting in many people moving out once they hit high incomes or having children already born when they started working outside the household earning wages rather then staying put while their incomes grew higher paying off student loans which many young adults take on before starting families themselves creatingwhat has become known as "Generational Poverty". Belmont is a census-designated place in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 9,746 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. The townsite of Belmont was first settled by Anglo-Californians in 1853 and named for Bishop George Washington Carleton (1786–1863). The town became a stop on the Butterfield Overland Mail route from Sacramento to Stockton. In 1868, the railroad reached Belmont through nearby Chester and constructed a depot there. The town's growth continued as agricultural products attracted settlers; in 1907 it had a population of 10,000 people. By 1920, however, Belmont had shrunk to 2,500 people due to rapid gentrification within Contra Costa County and other suburban expansion into its boundaries. The post office at Belmont was established in 1886 and operated until 1963; it was replaced by the current ZIP code 92511. A number of early businesses were located in or around the depot including an flour mill (1907), cheese factory (1910), soap manufacturing plant (1912), meatpacking company (1920), printing press (1920s), and several stores before they all closed during World War II because of bombing raids by Japan. However, some remained open until 1973 when they went out of business due to heavy competition from new shops opening up near himarketing centers throughout Silicon Valley during that time period such as Wal-Mart and Sears Roebuck & Co.. At one point between 1951 and 1957 there were only three small stores remaining in downtown Belmont: Wards Hardware Company Store on Main Street which closed in 1951 after being automated by rival retailer Kmart; First National Bank on Castro Street which also closed after being automated by rival bank Safeway; and Jardine’s dry goods store on 3rd Street which reopened as Jardine’s Camera Shop after Safeway pulled out of town;; In recent years Downtown Business District has experienced significant redevelopment with large mixed use projects - most notably One Market Plaza - though much more remains vacant than when DowntownBusinessDistrict opened almost 20 years ago
Belmont was founded in 1846 by Captain John Sutter and his brother, Samuel. The town became a post office in 1850, and then a county seat in 1857. It was incorporated as a city in 1902. In 1959, the city of Belmont merged with the adjacent towns of San Leonore and Santa Clara to form the City of San Francisco.
