Belmont is a small town in San Bernardino County, California. It is located on the eastern edge of the city of Riverside and is bordered by U.S. Route 52 to the south, Interstate 10 to the west, and State Route 12 to the north. The population was 21,045 at the 2010 census. The first military deployment in Belmont occurred during World War II when the United States Army's 3rd Infantry Division arrived here from Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944 as part of Operation Overlord. From September 1944 until December 1945, this division was assigned to First Marine Division under General James Gavin and fought in Guam and Saipan before being redeployed back east for duty in Europe. Upon their return home they were given command of an infantry brigade which served in Germany until early 1945 with Task Force 95th Infantry Regiment deployed here as part of Allied landings at Anzio beachhead on July 20-21st where they became legendary for their actions leading up to and during Operation OVERLORD which resulted in Nazi Germany's capitulation that day. In 1857, George Washington Carver moved to Belmont from Waterford Township, Michigan with his family. He started a cooperative grocery store called Carver's Grocery Store which operated until 1922. In 1915, Lillian Hellman founded her playwright husband’s production company called American Repertory Theatre in downtown San Francisco with money she had saved up during World War I playing bit parts in propaganda films made by the US military. She also ran her own theater company for several years before moving to Hollywood to become one of the most successful playwrights of her generation following the success of One Hundred Years of Solitude which she wrote and directed with Edward Albee.
