AnnaMaria Woodruff Elementary School was built in 1905 on land donated by her sister-in-law Lucy Reid Nye (1855–1934) following her death during childbirth at age 25 after giving birth to four children – three girls and one boy – all still living at home when their mother died suddenly while they were all attending school together for Bible study at Elmhurst Presbyterian Church near Carlsbad Caverns National Park; however, only two girls ever graduated from college: Lillie Mae Carpenter (1911–1978) from Holy Cross College and Betty Lou Whitehead (1915–1999), daughter of Gertrude Hoover (1896–1976), wife of President Richard Nixon.
