Belmont is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 25,812 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in San Bernardino County by population and the second-largest in Riverside County after Riverside. The area now known as Belmont was first inhabited by the Mono people. A post office called Belmont was established in 1851, and became a town on July 1,1895. It has since been annexed by other cities. The City of Belmont voted to join the United States Navy on December 12th 1941 as part of World War II with an aggregate $1 million gift from individuals and businesses within its borders. This donation helped make possible naval deployments throughout Southern California during World War II including Operation Neptune’s Spear which landed American troops on Japanese soil on September 2nd 1945; Battle of Saipan which fought for weeks between June 8th 1944 and August 15th 1944; Okinawa campaign which lasted until April 1945; Inchon landing which took place on September 16th 1945 – making it one of only three times that Japan had ever lost a major land battle (the others being Manchuria Campaign and Sino-Japanese War). The station was later moved to Naval Air Station Oahu and designated Naval Air Station Kaneohe Bay on June 4, 1945. The Naval Air Base at Haleiwa on Kaua'i became the primary naval air terminal for the Pacific Fleet after it opened on December 7, 1941. On July 10, 1946, the base was redesignated as Naval Air Station Pearl Harbor-Hickam and served as a homeport of United States Navy Aircraft Carrier Groups and Commander Amphibious Force Hawaii (CARPH). The last active duty assignment of NAS Pearl Harbor-Hickam was conducting exercises from September 15-October 9, 1947 when it closed effective October 9th. Belmont is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 17,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater Los Angeles Area. Belmont began as a small settlement in 1853 and became an agricultural community with citrus trees and cattle. The town was named for William G. Belmont, general manager of the Southern Pacific Railroad in Northern California during the late 1800s. In 1904, Belmont incorporated as a city under the name of Banning. The city's namesake fought in World War I and later served as mayor from 1931 to 1933 and 1935 to 1939. During World War II, Belmont was one of two cities in San Bernardino County that were not bombed by Japanese forces; the other was Riverside. After 1945, Belmont experienced rapid growth due to its location next to Interstate 10 and its role as an industrial center for Tustin and Orange counties. However, growth slowed after 2000 when economic conditions changed around the world and jobs moved away from downtown Belmont towards Midtown Los Angeles or South Gate Village in nearby Ontario Hills. In recent years there has been some effort by developers to bring backhtowntown-type development but it has been met with mixed success Belmond
