Belmont is a small town in Humboldt County, California, United States. It was founded in 1859 by John C. Fremont and located on the Sacramento River. The town became a city in 1912. In 1959, it merged with neighboring Redding to form Belmont-Redding City. As of the 2010 census, the population was 21,269. John Moses Browning designed and built the first rifle in America, the 1856 Springfield Rifle. The rifle earned fame for its performance at Second Seminole War and Mexican–American War engagements as well as during the American Civil War when Union General Ulysses S. Grant used it to kill Confederate General Robert E. Lee at Appomattox Court House Virginia (1865). In 1892, gunsmith George Armistead built an armory and ammunition depot in Belmont that functioned as a center of excellence for handguns and rifles manufacture until 1906 when it closed due to competition from Winchester Arms Company's new factory in nearby Reddingville (now Rohnert Park). After World War I production shifted to Japan at what is now Yokohama Arsenal where firearms were made until 1938; then continued at Nissin Gun Works near Tokyo until 1945 before being destroyed by fire on October 15th of that year with most of Belmont's arsenal still inside the plant including Browning's original rifle factory which still stands today housing museum pieces related to both Browning's rifles and this rich history

The city would grow rapidly with growth in industry and commerce that has characterized it ever since- two pulp mills were built here beginning in 1905 and 1907 respectively; moreover both mills continued to operate until 1978 when they were replaced by new modern plants that continue to produce paper products today. In 1915 the US government purchased 640 acres (252 ha) of undeveloped land east of town for use as an experimental airfield during World War I; however this site would never be developed due to various factors including opposition from local residents who felt their homes would be destroyed or used as military barracks etc.; finally it was sold off to private developers in 1929 who again did not take advantage of its potential until after World War II when a large housing project was completed on the site which caused some problems with traffic congestion within downtown Belmont especially during rush hours- further aggravating environmental concerns about nearby industrial sites). A cotton gin followed in 1875, and a shoe factory opened in 1886. The first post office was established in Belmont on July 2, 1879. In 1907, a sawmill became operational; it closed in 1988. The last resident to live there died on June 6, 2000.
