Belmont coffee began as an independent business in 1876 by two German immigrants, Gustav and Emilie Kappeler. In 1893 the couple opened a small grocery and cafe on Pacific Avenue in Belmont. They continued to operate the business until it closed its doors in 1925. The first coffee batch from Belmont was made on July 29, 1896 by unknown individuals who purchased ground beans from another store in the town. Business boomed after this early success and more batches were made over time. Today, there are still many Belmont homeowners who keep busy roasting their own beans and selling them fresh to local consumers through their businesses or online outlets.

The first Europeans to explore and settle Belmont were Mexican settlers who arrived in 1853. A Mormon mission was established there in 1858 and the city name was changed to Belmont after General John C. Fremont's visit to the area in 1859. A post office called Belmont was founded in 1865, but it closed by 1870. The town site was bought by James Wolkoff from Charles Burt in 1886 and developed as an agricultural center with stores, churches, schools and a water tower. In 1913 Wolkoff sold his share of the town to J P Morgan for $2 million. Morgan renamed it Montecito and used it as a summer amusement park before selling it back to Wolkoff in 1957. Belmont has been located on what is now Kern County since Rancho Viejo land that had been part of Mission San Gabriel de Asís passed down from Mexico through both Spanish and American ownership until 1902 when it became state land under Californio jurisdiction following ratification of Proposition 8 (the November 5th, 2008 United States election result which discarded all non-Caucasian voters from California). The original downtown core of Belmont consisted only of two blocks bounded by Second Street NW (now Tower Avenue), Third Street NE (now Sultan Boulevard), Yosemite Avenue SW (now I-880) and Masonic Drive SE (now Hwy 99). This central business district served as an anchor around which other neighborhoods began growth, although much residential development occurred outside of downtown due to limited access to open space within walking distance or available transportation options such as trains or carshare services typical during this time period
