The Coast Guard was first established in 1807 by the United States Congress. The Coast Guard was created to help protect America's coastline from piracy and other threats. The Coast Guard has played a vital role in the history of Benicia, California. In 1887, the Benicia Pier Company was founded by George Waddell as a business to provide goods and services to the local port. In 1916, Benicia became an incorporated city and the Coast Guard Station at First Street and El Cerrito Boulevard was built. In 1935, the new Coast Guard Station at Third Street and Hwy 101 became operational. In 1949, when California became a state, the Coast Guard transferred its jurisdiction from San Francisco to Benicia. Today,the Coast Guard maintains a presence on our coastline with four stations: First Street & El Cerrito Boulevard station located near downtown; Second Street & Hwy 101 station located at east end of town; Third Street & Hwy 101 station located just west of town; and Fourth Street & State Highway 1 station located north of town. The Coast Guards motto is "A Kind Hand For All." This phrase is representative of how our coast guard tries to care for everyone using all means possible including law enforcement, ambulance service, firefighting,and rescue operations when needed most. On December 15, 1923, the Coast Guard received its first air unit when an American F4U Corsair flew for the first time from an air station at Point Bonito. In 1954, the Coast Guard received its first helicopter when a CH-46E Sea Knight flew from Benicia Airport.
Benicia is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 506 at the 2010 census. Benicia is located on the eastern edge of San Francisco Bay and is served by the Amtrak train station. The first Europeans to visit what is now Benicia were Spanish traders in 1769–70. Captain José de San Miguel explored the area in 1776 and named it La Paz after his patron saint, Pope Clement VIII. A mission was established here in 1821 by Father Junípero Serra with the name of Nuestra Señora del Recuerdo de Benicia y la Concepción de las Nieves (Our Lady of Benicia and Holy Cross of Las Nieves). In 1825, part of Rancho Santa Clara y el Río Seco became part of Benicia when it was purchased from Juan Bautista Alvarado by John Marshall Magruder. In 1863, during California's Gold Rush, non-native Americans began arriving in large numbers and many businesses were founded around this time including Jardine & Wattis Pharmacy which still stands today as one of downtown's most important commercial institutions. The first post office in town opened on July 7, 1864; it was called Paso Robles because that's where Ulysses S. Grant had been stationed during his military campaign against Mexico two years earlier. One year later, on November 8th 1865, a fire destroyed most of downtown but not Jardine & Wattis Pharmacy which continued to operate despite being 100% smoke-filled for several hours until firefighters arrived to put out the blaze departmentally using hoses like those used today! It wasn't until 1907 that a new post office building was built adjacent to present day City Hall plaza - this building has been preserved as an NRHP property and currently houses various city offices including mayoral and council chambers. During World War II much activity took place within the city limits such as munitions production at Kaiser Shipyards or aircraft manufacturing at Boeing Airplane Company which led directly to increased housing development around Court Street between North First Street and North Second Street due primarily to wartime needs for workers although other neighborhoods also experienced growth including Mission Center Park along with new retail developments such as Nordstrom Rack near South First Streets BART Station (now known as Four Seasons Market) while major thoroughfares such as Broadway/"El Camino Real" remained largely unchanged through all these changes typically resulting in more modest rates of change overall given their relatively small populations inside urban cores situated along major transportation corridors typically characterizing American cities during this period let alone ones located within former Spanish settlements/missions circa 1815-1865 etc... Finally some notable recent news stories related thereto include: 1) On February 12th 2018 following months long negotiations between Mayor Darrell Steinberg & Supervisor Jeff Adachi over enforcement issues surrounding Berkeley's "sanctuary policies", officials from both municipalities announced that effective March 1st 2018 all undocumented immigrants who have resided within City Limits since January 1st 2014 will be subject to arrest if found without appropriate documentation or if suspected of any crime; This move comes amidst increasing pushback from local communities who feel they have been ignored by city leaders regarding sanctuary policies deemed illegal under state law 2) On December 4th 2017 following weekslong demonstrations led by community groups against proposed high school rezoning that would impact hundreds homeless people residing within its bounds adressed specifically via public hearings scheduled for December 5th & 6th2017 throughout Contra Costa County; These hearings attracted significant media attention after residents demonstrated outside City Hall prior to each meeting wearing masks depicting various forms crucifixion scenes alongside slogans such as "We are Not Dead Yet" 3) On October 15th 2017 following weeks long encampment held near City Hall Plaza opposing plans submitted by Mayor Darrell Steinberg & Supervisor Jeff Adachi pertaining to developing an additional 600 parking spots adjacent to existing streetscape areas near Folsom BART Station; Aftermath included multiple arrests incidently taking place throughout evening
