Benicia, California is a city in the San Joaquin Valley of Northern California. It is named for Benjamin Fenton, an early settler and one of the first land owners in the area. The population was 25,822 at the 2010 census. Benicia has been a incorporated city since 1892. In 1870, Benicia was founded by Captain John Sutter as a landing on his ferryboat "Fenton" which ferried goods between Sacramento and Benicia. After years of growth and development, it became an incorporated city on December 12, 1892 with a population of 20 people. The name Benicia comes from Spanish meaning "place where trees grow". The City's history can be traced back to 1850 when prospectors discovered gold near present-day Fillmore Street and Telegraph Avenue and began mining operations in what would become known as the Fillmore Gold Rush period. The town site was surveyed by George Washingburne in 1851 and purchased by John Sutter who named it Benicia after himself because he had found gold there before with no success. On November 8th, 1852, Captain John Sutter donated 3 acres (1 km2) of land at what is now Main Street to build a town square; this donation marks the beginning of downtown Benicia's current layout including its original five blocks plus two additional blocks extending north onto Telegraph Avenue until all but one block were destroyed by fire on May 9th, 1886 during an unsuccessful attempt to dynamite an old mine shafts beneath Main Street! On October 14th 1860 two men - James Hutton who operated Hutton’s Store across from today’s First Congregational Church on North Main Street and Michael Ahern – started work atwhat would later become called mayonnaise factory #1 on Second street east of Market Streetsoughly contemporary with today’s Unilever plant buildings located just south of Third street west side – both erected subsequent year soon after discovery while mayonnaise factory #2 did not start production until 1863 when entrepreneur Elijah Dyer acquired interest in company due to popular demand for their product among local farmers & consumers alike…the business continued operation under various names until 1865 when pioneer Elias Dyer sold interest to brothers Samuel Morse & Alfred Vail who renamed factory “Union Baking Company” still extant today – Union Baking Company produced bread out front doors from 1861 thru 1865″ (City website). In 1862 William Cady boughtmayonnaise factory #1 along 2nd St., south/west corner opposite Post Office building; this property also included butter churning equipment formerly belonging to early settlers Hiram Fuller & Nathan Hale – William Cady ran bakery out front from 1862-1868″ (City website). In 1865 Samuel Morse buyer of Union Baking Company purchase old grist millinery owned by Solomon Payson & family); new mill built east side lot facing Market Streets circa 1870″ (City website).
