Benicia is a small town in California, located about an hour south of San Francisco. The population was 6,876 at the 2010 census. Benicia is part of the East Bay Regional District. The first Europeans to visit what is now Benicia were those who set out from Monterey in 1807 on the Discovery Expedition under Captains Robert Humboldt and Nicolas Biddle. They named the place after their guide, Benito de Chaves y Valdez, who had accompanied them through much of Northwestern Mexico during their exploratory journey. At that time there was no specific written record of any such place; it must have been imagined by those early explorers as they passed through this area on their way to Nootka Sound. In 1832 Mexican traders discovered gold here and began leasing land from the local Native Americans for mining purposes. By 1840 over 330 men were working in and around Benicia while just 10 families lived hereabouts permanent homes only rented temporarily during vaudeville shows or other events. A new courthouse and jail were built in 1851-52 by Judge John Fenton; also erected were two schools (now city landmarks), a Methodist Church (1875), two churches (1877) and a small number of residences before all but one ceased operations by 1880 because of high costs associated with maintaining such large infrastructure projects with so few residents living within easy walking distance of most services needed for day-to-day life across multiple blocks near downtown including post office, grocery store, livery stable etc.. The last resident left town on December 1st 1980 when Valley Transit discontinued passenger service to downtown Benicia effective January 1st 1981 due to budget cuts affecting all transit agencies nationwide.. In 1982 Valley Transit restored passenger service until May 30th 1991 when it was discontinued again due to budget reductions once again affecting all transit agencies statewide including Valley Transit effective June 15th 1991 . On December 5th 1992 Valley Transit celebrated its 50 year anniversary with a special event honoring employees past & present along with Old Town Mayor Harry Ramos... Benicia, California is a city in the San Joaquin Valley of California. The population was 66,711 at the 2010 census. Benicia is part of the Fresno metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Benicia were Spanish mission traders and soldiers in 1769–70. The Californios, as the American-born Mexicans were then called, founded an independent Mexican republic in 1821 and named their new capital City of Benicia after José Nieto de Benítez y Costilla, captain general of Mexico's forces during its war with England. From 1847 until 1850 it was also the seat of government for Alta California under Governor Pio Pico. In 1865, following a devastating fire that destroyed most of downtown Benicia and killed over 100 people, the Ulysses S Grant administration designated it as a town to help rebuild. By 1870, however, only about 60 people lived in downtown Benicia; by 1900 only 10 remained. That year saw an important development when local citizens petitioned for incorporation as a city because they felt that they had been left out of decisions made aboutrowth within Fresno County and wanted representation on city council. On November 3rd 1860 incorporation occurred with a population of just 4 citizens (all women) voting on election day against 8 other candidates who opposed it; these eight opponents were later charged with bribery and conspiracy to obstruct incorporation proceedings which led to their convictions and imprisonment which severely limited their ability to participate in civic life thereafter). Despite this setback incorporations continued through 1861 but thereafter never again reached such levels due mostly to lack of funding from county officials or lack of interest by residents themselves; indeed one report indicated that "the desire for incorporation has gradually dwindled away." In 1912Beniciatta became one of several United States municipalities located outside California while still belonging to Mexico City so that Mexican nationals could vote without having their votes counted within state boundaries (though all municipal elections still took place inside Arizona until 1959). This change helped ensure that Mexicans constituted majorities both politically and economically throughout much of Southern California (and into Greater Los Angeles), particularly since Mexican immigrants increasingly sought work opportunities inland rather than migrate across state lines for fear thereof Thanks largely to advances in air travel during World War II – even though most students attending college studied inside Mexico –Benicàtia exploded growth beginning in the mid-1940s as families began moving away from central LA looking for more affordable housing prices closer to industry clusters like Kernville/Bakersfield etc., although some original businesses did continue along Main Street despite migration losses ( notably Donatelli's Italian Bakery ). However during WWII suburban sprawl accelerated rapidly northward starting near Chowchilla taking up valuable farmland between Chowchilla east past Bakersfield into Kern County while many old homes along Main Street were bulldozed or turned into subdivisions . After World War II much older homes were replaced by highrise apartments focusing on employment opportunities close thereto rather than being used as residences anymore while main streets filled with strip malls , motel conversions,, chain stores etc., finally leaving little open space between neighborhoods . By 1970 few buildings remaining standing taller than 30 feet stood within central benitiana ; nearly all newer development occurring outside its confines . Today muchhas changed but nostalgia remains strong among some longtime residents especially around Main Street where many small businesses remain
