Benicia, California is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 497 at the 2010 census. Benicia is located on the southern shore of San Francisco Bay and is bordered by Walnut Creek to the east, Livermore to the south-southwest, Martinez to the north-northwest and Dublin to the northwest. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Benicia has a temperate climate, abbreviated "Cfa". The first Europeans to visit what is now Benicia were Spanish explorers in 1769. The area was named after Manuel de Ayala y Gómez who had surveyed this area for Spain in 1802. A small town began development around 1868 when two brothers founded Rancho El Monte on land that they had purchased from Juan Bautista Alvarado. In 1876 it became part of Contra Costa County when it was created from parts of Orinda and Pleasant Hill counties. In 1906, agricultural landowner John Cranch donated 1,200 acres (500 ha) of land southeast of downtown for a new city park; City Park would be renamedBenicia Municipal Athletic Stadium in his honor in 1959. In 1918 downtown business owners formed an organization called "The Civic League" which successfully lobbied county supervisors to create streetscape beautification projects including tree planting and fence replacement along much of Market Street between First and Second Streets as well as improvements inside City Hall block between Market and 2nd Streets. During World War II large amounts of plutonium were produced at Hanford Site near Benicia; some plant personnel lived within walking distance of Hanford Arsenal during their workdays. After 1945 many white flight/replacement workers returned home following World War II; economic development led to more housing being built throughout Downtown Benicia over time until current boundaries were established in 1960 with just under one million people living there today

Caffeine soon caught on with people all over the world and within just a few decades, coffee had become one of humanity's most beloved drinks.
