Gun gift history in Benicia, California goes back to 1887 when two brothers, Lorenzo and Charles DeFilippo, started a store called the Benicia Arms Armory. The DeFilippos sold firearms and ammunition throughout their business until 1912 when they closed their store. From 1912-1948 the Benicia Arms Armory was run by Julius Hofer who also ran the adjacent Hofer's Department Store. In 1948 Hofer's died and his son Julius took over the business. In 1966 Julius passed away and his daughter Kathy took over running the business until her death in 1990. After Kathy's death gun gifts stopped being given out at the armory as it became too difficult to keep track of who gave what to whom. From 1990-2002gun gift shops operated at the armory which remained open until it was closed down due to a fire in 2003. In 2003 a group of people decided to reopen the armory as part of a project called " Gateway To Gun History." The goal of this project was to document all aspects of gun gift history withinBenicia so that future generations could learn more about this important topic. The first phase of this project was to collect old records from previous owners of the armory including birthdates, addresses, etcetera. This information would be used to compile an extensive collection of historical photographs and paperwork pertaining to guns purchased or given away in Benicia over time. With these records in hand we were able to begin organizing our museum which currently contains approximately 150 items spanning 5 floors with an estimated 2,000 pieces on display! The next step was tryingto find donors for our museum project since there wasn't any record kept of who donated what amount/time ago! We turned outto be successful as we found several individuals who contributed money over time but didn't leave any identifiable documentation behind such as birthdates or addresses! This gave us another opportunity to start gathering additional data through interviews and research which will help us piece together exactly how guns were acquired in Benicia over time! Our current plan is currently consistingof photographing every piece on display so that we can create an accurate inventory for future reference purposes; however, there are many items that still need desperately more pictures! We hope that with continued effort and donations from our community members like you we can continue making gun gift history available for everyone interested in learning more about this often misunderstood topic!

Benicia, California is a city in the southern portion of San Francisco Bay Area. It was founded by Spanish settlers in 1799 as part of Rancho Cañon de Benicia. The city was named for General Antonio Lopez de Benicia, who served as military governor of California from 1825 to 1830. As of 2010, the population of Benicia was 1191. The early history of Benicia is replete with tales of bravery and fortitude. In 1799, Spanish soldiers established a small settlement on an armada landing at what is now Pier 39 opposite Seal Beach after Task Force 103 destroyed the original San Francisco landfall on November 7 that year during their campaign against the Mexican insurgents known as The Durand Conspiracy. Captain Manuel Nieto and his men were among those killed in the engagement; their bodies lay alongside that of Lieutenant José Saravia who had also perished that day aboard HMS Guerriero off Santa Cruz County dockyard). In 1800 Juan Bautista Cabrillo erected a postern gate at Garden Point which remains one of downtown's most recognizable landmarks today. On July 8, 1821 (encompassing much of what is now downtown), Mexicanist forces under Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna sacked and burned Benicia for refusing to swear allegiance to Mexico City over any another town or village within California’s boundaries - an event commemorated annually by street name "Lopez Street" in honor of that particular pioneer leader and his fallen troops. Benicia was founded by Don Fernando de Benicia in 1846. The town grew rapidly after timber and farming became the mainstay of its economy. In 1868, Benicia became an incorporated city. It experienced strong commercial and industrial growth during the late 19th century and early 20th century, reaching a peak in population in 1920. However, during the Great Depression, Benicia lost much of its economic stability and declined thereafter. Today, the town is a small rural community with a limited range of activities outside of education, agricultural production or tourism.
