The hospital serves Greater Benicia and surrounding areas now. One of their most famous donations was made in 1978 when they gave $1 million to help build Cal Poly San Luis Obispo’s new football stadium. The stadium is now called Levi’s Stadium and is Thurgood Marshall University’s home field. On July 26th of each year, during Memorial Day weekend (May 25-27), the Battle Hymn of Malaya is sung at Camp Pendleton by marines from all over America including those deployed overseas that day or who have served since then! Benicia is a small city in the Central Valley of California, located on the banks of the Benicia River. It was founded in 1847 by Jedediah Smith and named for his wife, Bernice. Today, Benicia is a census-designated place (CDP) with a population of 33,711 as of 2010. The city was first settled by Native Americans and Spanish colonists in the late 18th century. The area that now includes Benicia was part of Rancho Valencia de Santa Clara de Asis until it was granted to Captain Juan Bautista Alvarado in 1797. In 1819, Captain Alvarado sold part of this land to nipple manufacturer John Davenport for $1,000 cash plus 10 percent interest per year. Davenport renamed the land "Benicia" after his birthplace, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. In 1848, during Mexican rule over California, San Francisco's mayor Antonio Vallejo recommended that Los Angeles be established as an independent city because of its growing population and potential waterwayside shipping routes. The City Council agreed and appointed Vallejo as its first Mayor. In 1849 José Gomez moved from San Rafael to start what would become known as Benicia's First Bank which opened its doors on December 15th under the name "José Gomez' Federal Reserve Bank." This bank served as a prototype for later public banks throughout California. In 1865 saw another milestone when Ayer Company erected their flour mill on current day 4th Street between Sacramento Avenue and Constitution Boulevard; this became one of America's most prominent mills during the early 20th century due to its production costs being lower than those at other facilities around town.. In 1898–99 Wirtz & Sons built what is still considered one of downtown Benicia's earliest buildings - The City Hall building which housed both council chambers and various offices until it burned down in 1951 along with much else within Downtown BENICIA! Downtown BENICIA again enjoyed some success following World War II when numerous businesses were constructed such as The Masonic Temple (now known as Grace Cathedral), The Western Guild Theatre (now known as Regal Cinemas), Pacific Gas & Electric Company Headquarters Building (now known as PGE Park) and many others including two new high schools – West High School (opened in 1949) and East High School – both opened in 1952 adjacent to PGE Park A major fire destroyed most buildings within Downtown BENICIA on September 25th 1958 but fortunately no lives were lost
