The Benicia National Guard was organized on May 15, 1894. Originally, the unit was called the Volunteer Infantry Battalion, California. The first national guard unit in Benicia was organized as the Benicia Rifle and Pistol Club on December 5th of that year. The club became a regiment on January 1st, 1895. On July 31st of that year, the regiment changed its name to the 2d National Guard Regiment and moved to downtown Benicia. The 2d National Guard Regiment served in various capacities throughout 1898-1902 during the Spanish American War and World War I until it was disbanded on October 12th of 1918 due to lack of volunteers for duty. On October 16th of 1918, theBenicia Rifle and Pistol Club again became a regiment when they joined forces with other rifle clubs from nearby towns in order to form what would become known as "the Benicia Rifles." On September 10th of 1920, units from Butte County also joined forces with those from Kern County in order to form "the Butte County National Guard." This organization remained active until it disbanded on November 17th of 1923 due to a lack of volunteers for service. In 1933-1934, both Fresno and Kern counties seceded from California and formed their own states which left behind a vacuum in military personnel needed for state defense purposes so local militias were recruited by state authorities instead. In 1935 these militias were reorganized into brigades under state control with each brigade having three battalions (referred to hereafter as companies). A total of seventy-six brigades were created across all nine US states during World War II including sixteen in California alone resulting in 1,849 men being mobilized for war service out of 936 households statewide! Following World War II there was an increase in demand for soldiers stationed overseas so cavalry troops were converted into armor divisions which then became infantry divisions within armored corps although artillery troops continued serving through reserve status until deactivation on May 15th 1946 effective upon expiration date 1967 DOD policy had stated that such units could no longer be activated or maintained without specific DOD direction! During peacetime between 1958-1964 there was no realignment or change whatsoever within military manpower resources despite calls by Governor Jerry Brown for reform citing rising crime rates among Californians coupled with an oversupply at home caused by predicted population growth rate over 50%. Instead Mayor Bob Filner enacted legislation merging city fire departments into county fire departments along with expanding public works programs creating new jobs throughout Greater Los Angeles while reducing costs associated with maintaining traditional city services! Governor Earl Warren exceeded his gubernatorial authority when he ordered all combat troops withdrawn from Vietnam effective February 7th 1969 following secret negotiations between President Richard Nixon & General Westmoreland leading up to this decision - thus ending any possibility that Americans might have fought alongside Viet Cong forces outside our borders! However some troops did serve honorably through deployments within South Vietnam responsible for operations such as Operation Market Garden where Ulysses S. Grant's Division fought valiantly against Nazi Germany near Saigon]. It is part of the Salinas–Monterey County, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Benicia has a temperate Mediterranean climate with hot summers and mild winters. The first Europeans to visit what is now Benicia were Spanish missionaries in 1797-98. The Mission San Francisco de Asís was founded on December 28, 1821 by Father José Altamirano and Father Manuel Nieto. In 1825, the Mexican government granted Rancho Cur Rodríguez to José Antonio Cura y Ocampo. On October 15, 1848 Benicia was incorporated as a town from portions of Rancho Los Andes and Rancho Santa Cruz del Norte that had been ceded to the United States by Mexico after Californias admission into the Union as an independent state on January 3 of that year. In 1863 during the American Civil War General Grant ordered all military forces in California withdrawn except for a small garrison at Benicia under General Atherton which remained until 1865 when it withdrew completely due to disease control efforts over large areas of Northern California involved in war with Confederate Texas troops under General John Custer

Benicia, California, is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 37,811 at the 2010 census. It is the sixth-largest city in Northern California and the second-largest city east of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Benicia is located on Hwy 41 and State Route 14. The first permanent settler in what would become Benicia was Captain John Purdy of Portsmouth, NH on January 24th 1797. He named his land Rancho San Francisco de la Bañada after José Joaquín de Castro y Valdés who owned part of Rancho Cucamonga to the south. In 1847, when gold was discovered nearby at Siskiyou Valley (now Tuolumne), miners from Benicia started arrive with their families to prospect for gold near Siskiyou and Cherryvale Fields. On November 5th of that year a group led by Captn John Purdy struck an ore vein at Neeples Mill and soon developed into a successful mining operation which sustained them through many difficult years during which no other mine operated in this area apart from those around Yosemite National Park during that time period). The first post office for Benicia was established on July 15th 1848 by George Waddell as part of the new town concept designed to promote trade among farmers and merchants along Hwy 41 between Sacramento and San Francisco Bay Area In 1851 two brothers by the name of Emmons opened a general store just north of where Interstate 80 now meets Highway 41 about 2 miles east of downtown Benicia Just before Christmas 1851 locals built the first church in what would become BENICIA with cornerstones laid on December 25th 1850 by Revd James Brickell followed one week later with services being held December 31st 1850 under cover of darkness with member’s coming from as far away as Stockton due to snowstorm conditions prevailing at that time On January 1st 1852 an act was passed “ An Act To establish churches throughout our territory” leading to construction starting immediately on First Presbyterian Church site across from today's cemetery off Hwy 41 near present day Main Street New churches were dedicated every month until everything stopped due to lack of funding in 1863 when state government takeover occurred A school house also operated side-by-side with First Presbyterian Church building until 1865 when it burned down . After repairs were made it reopened as Glenwood Schoolhouse within months . In 1865 another church built (this one called Christ Episcopal) located adjacent to Glenwood Schoolhouse before being destroyed by fire during 1906 earthquake . Reconstruction began but never ended because money ran out finally resulting in closure/ demolition/reconstruction Of all three buildings including Christ Episcopal Church 1935
