Benicia, California is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 59,811 at the 2010 census. Benicia is the smallest city in California and second-smallest municipality by population size to Daly City. It lies on both sides of the San Francisco Bay and forms part of the East Bay metropolitan area with San Jose and Oakland. The name "Benicia" derives from Mission San Miguel Arcángel, founded in 1777 by Spanish missionaries. The first European to visit what is now Benicia was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on February 2, 1542 as he sailed along what is now Highway 1 north from Monterey Peninsula towards Santa Cruz Island. In 1821 Mexican land grant Rancho Cachuma was made available for homesteaders near present day Benicia and it became a town on November 7 of that year when five families under José Figueroa sold their claims for $2 per acre to Captain George Folsom who named it after his father General Antonio Figueroa y Aguilar. A post office called Benicia was established in 1827 and remained open until 1903 when it was replaced by an electric telegraph office which still stands today adjacent to downtown. In 1865 three brothers – Hernando Beachy Jr., Fernando Beachy Sr., and José Moreno – founded the Pacific Railroad Company while they were working as construction engineers for Southern Pacific Railroad Company between Sacramento and Salinas. They began building tracks west of Redwood City where they intersected American River Railway Company trackage east of Alma (now Foster City) before reaching Benicia creek which led into Petaluma Creek valley which they followed all the way down to Sonoma Valley where they dividedtrack between rival companies over some miles before coming together again at an intersection south of Ferndale about two miles west of modern day North Hollywood that became known as “Beachy” Station because these three companies had their trains running side-by-side thereabouts).
