The Berkeley Army Museum of Art has a rich history dating back to the early 1800s. It was here that California's first regiment of professional soldiers, the 1st Battalion, Los Angeles Mounted Rifles, was formed in 1846. The museum also houses an interesting collection of army equipment and medals from various periods. In 1915, the University of California at Berkeley became a part of the United States Army and began providing undergraduate students with access to military history resources. In 1951, the school moved its main campus to Fort Benning, Georgia and continued provide research opportunities for students at its new location. The museum opened in 1987 on North African Avenue in downtown Berkeley. Today, it contains more than 2 million artifacts from over 100 years of American military history.

In 1847, two years after Gold Rush Fever had swept across northern California and newly acquired land lay atopunerable Miwok Indian reservations south of San Francisco had become accessible for settlement by white men under contract from Governor Alameda County commissioners under instructions from Secretary Manuel Fontana – including three-time winner of the state lottery—William Richardson – began purchasing tribal lands north and west of San Francisco Bay for $3 an acre (1 ha). In 1851 Richardson made an agreement with Juan Bautista de Anza y Costilla to split present day Contra Costa County into two parts: Bakersfield would be part to the east while Martinez would be part to the west. By 1870 both Contra Costa County and Marin County were organized as part of Alameda County with Hayward becoming its capital

Berkeley, California is a city in the San Francisco Bay Area of Northern California. The city was founded on April 1, 1777 by Captain George Rogers Clark and his assistant Lt. John Coolidge. It became a state capital in 1849, and has been the cultural and economic center of the Bay Area since then. The University of California, Berkeley, one of America's most prestigious universities, is located in Berkeley. The first European to visit what is now Berkeley was Gaspar de Portolà on November 27, 1769. He named it Santa Fé della Concepción after Saint Francis Xavier who had visited Alta California five years earlier. In 1802, two brothers founded the College of Stray Dogs at present-day UC Berkeley because they could not find any local students to join them in founding a college for dogs. In 1833, an act were passed by the State Legislature which granted land to the College for a new university withinits borders. It was given the name "University of California". In 1868, UC Berkeley became an independent school when it merged with another educational institution called Monterey Agricultural School (later renamed Monterey Peninsula Normal School). After being closed for several years due to financial difficulties brought about by overspending on its operations as both institutions shared facilities and students between them., UC Berkeley reopened in1875 with its current name; that year also saw the first use of electricity at UC Berkeley whenan experimental transformer was installed in Building 6A.[1] On October 16th 1870 nineteen students took fire from their dormitories during protests against military draftsmanship[2] which started off as an all-out defense effort against what many believed were unfair forces stacked against American Manhood interests[3][4]. In 1881 Chancellor George Westinghouse established what would be known as North America's first ever graduate school of engineering at UC Berkeley under director Arthur Krohn called "Krohn Institute".[5][6] With growth came increasing costs associated with providing quality education such as faculty salaries and infrastructure needed for large scale instruction including Athletics Stadium (then Recreation Grounds), converting Lane Hall into an Academic Building,[7] construction of Hearst Tower,[8][9] and other necessary amenities for campus life that continue up until this day. In 1927–28,[10] violence broke out on campus after members of different groups met to protest differing changes made to Regents' proposed budget plans which would have slashed funding available to UCSF from $27 million down to $12 million despite pleas from Governor Goodwin Proctor.[11][12][13][14]), resulting in three dayslong disturbance that left four people dead and dozens injured[15], although no charges were ever filed(these events are sometimes referred to as "Berkeley Riots"). During World War II enrollment increased rapidly due To enlistment rates going up 50% nationally however following Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941 all campuses were placed under martial law without prior notice or warning; therefore only lower level courses were offered until 1942 when higher level classes resumed[16]. However after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor again less than two weeks later Berkleeians did not take kindly to this news and began protesting outside Sharpie's store near Haste Field where they eventually burned tires inside so police could remove them[17]; ultimately leading to public shaming by Mayor Henry Durant who rescinded martial law decreeing that Berkleeians should show patriotism through peaceful means instead[18].
