The success of Berkeley’s coffee houses led to further development along Telegraph Avenue. In 1922, two brothers founded what would become known as Starbucks Corporation. The company began selling coffee at local convenience stores before opening its first store in Seattle, Washington two years later. With initial investment from their parents, Starbucks began expanding throughout North America and Europe. By 2001, it had over 100 stores worldwide. Today there are more than 2 million people living in Berkeley according to the 2016 census report; making it one of the most diverse cities in America.
