The first coffee beans were roasted in the city of Rome, Italy in the early 16th century. Coffee was ground and brewed fresh for religious ceremonies and small-scale transactions. The drink of choice for aristocrats and courtiers, coffee soon spread throughout Europe. In 1804, Swiss Chemist Johann Georg Hahn recognized that three different types of coffee bean grew on different trees in Africa: Arabica, Robusta and Ethiopia. He named the variety used to roast these beans African Typico (Africa's traditional type). By 1825, all European countries had their own variant of Typico coffee. Coffee began to be exported to America in 1795 by Dutch traders under the name Java Coffee. The first cup of American-roasted coffee was served at a meeting of the Continental Congress on July 4, 1795. A new type of roast was developed at an English mill near Liverpool in 1797 by John Roebuck using whole orchoir beans from Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). This so-called "Kentucky" roasted coffee brought popularity back to England where it continued until about 1830. Dutch traders introduced Sumatra coffees into New Netherland during 1624–1627 as part of a trade mission led by Hendrick Corstiaensen; this period is also known as the Dutch Golden Age for itscoffee production. In 1795, Americans discovered that they could make excellent quality cups of espresso with just two types—Robusta and Ethiopian—of Beans grown on different continents' trees differently processed but still including some essential oils which gave them their distinctive flavor profile In 1814 French trader Pierre Le Moyne sailed up what is now called Cape Horn and encountered a group of Fijian Islanders who were roasting their own sweet potatoes near modern day San Francisco Bay; he learned that they were making fine quality coffee from these pods while ashore - this alerted him to possible future opportunities for exporting Javaca Coffee . In 1818 Portuguese whaler Manuel da Costa set out from Lisbon with 700 pounds (272 kilograms)of bulk Javaca Coffee beans bound for Brazil; he reached Recife on Jan 6th Loaded his ship with sacks full of washed coffees without loss/damageand landed his cargo unloading all his valuable cargo into town square before dawn he started drinking hot Javaca Coffee straight from the water – people couldn't believe it! After tasting this incredible product first hand he decided that it must be traded back home as soon as possible so went straightaway ashore to return with more weightless sacks…he had found Nirvana! Portuguese sailors visiting America brought back several tons (~4000 kg) worth Javaca Coffee between 1840-1850 however sailors only made landfall once every six years due to competition from ships sailing down California's coast looking for valuable cargoes like Gold Rush era miners did not find any significant quantities ojavaca coffee until 1862 when Spanish sailor Vicente Lopez discovered an area off Northern California containing large quantities
