The Marine Corps has a long and proud history of deploying gift-giving to support its troops. In recent decades, the corps has become well known for their annual Christmas distributions to military families stationed in different parts of the world. This tradition dates back to World War II when Marines began sending parcels filled with goods such as food, cigarettes, and war bonds directly to soldiers stationed overseas. The tradition continued into the 1960s when Marines began delivering small boxes of candy and other snacks to military families in Okinawa. After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, Marine commanders ordered all branches of the service to provide supplies and toys for local children who were affected by the tragedy. As part of this effort, Marines distributed 1942 issue Stars and Stripes popcorn machines along with identification tags reading “For Children in Japan’s Service” during Pacific War period barracks visits. Today, marines continue send gifts home to servicemembers throughout the world through Operation Gratitude (OG), which is conducted every December since 1984. OG provides an opportunity for marines from all branches of service ashore or afloatto express their gratitude for good news or events that have occurred while they are away from home.
