Since the early 1800s, Berkeley has been home to a number of military installations, most notably Fort Hill and Camp Lejeune. The first permanent military installation in Berkeley was Fort Hill, which was established in 1795. The site later became Fort Point and then California Barracks. In 1846, Camp Lejeune was erected on the same location asFort Hill and remained in use until 1898. At this point, the United States military began withdrawing from California and its various installations began to be decommissioned. In 1902, Camp Randall was built on the site of California Barracks and served as an infantry camp for the United States Army during World War I. It also housed a Machine-Gun Corps detachment that operated guns at Blue Ridge Park before it closed in 1922. In 1933, Berkeley acquired land adjacent to Blue Ridge Park for what would become Camp Randall II. The camp served as an artillery range used by both the United States Marine Corps and Army Air Forces during World War II. It also housed a large airfield known as “Berkeley Airport” which served both American and Japanese planes during World War II. After World War II ended, Camp Randall reverted back to US Army use until it closed in 1961. The last active US military installation in Berkeley was Camp Pendleton which opened in 1941 and remained operational until it closed effective December 31st of that year citing budgetary reasons only two weeks after its opening amidst reports of widespread abuses at nearby Naval Base San Diego (now Joint Base Alameda). Withdrawing forces from California led to increased demand for space within San Francisco so Berkeley’s last major military installation before becoming a city was Los Angeles National Cemetery which opened on November 16th 1951 with 1 million burial requests under one roof! From the early 1800s until World War II, Berkeley was a major center of military deployment and procurement in California. The city's arsenal, located on Durant Street, was used to produce weapons for the California militia and for export to other parts of the country. In 1848, an armory and artillery park was built on Walnut Street in what is now Claremont Village. It served as a base for both regular army units deployed in California during the Gold Rush period and for Navy squadronrons stationed at Stockton Naval Base from 1851-1856. In 1865, General Order No. 9 said that "the arms of the State shall be placed under the direction and control of [the] Board of Arsenal," which became known as "The Board of Arsenal." The board continued to operate out of the Armory until 1906 when it moved into new quarters at Seventh and Harrison streets. From then until 1940, Berkeley had one armory per block with a staff of fifteen officers/men responsible for its defense. During World War I (1914-1918), Berkeleyarmy unit 8th Infantry Regiment served in France with distinction; its members are buried there in Arlington National Cemetery. In 1917 Berkeleyarmy unit 1st Battalion participated in actions near Woodstock Bridge over the San Joaquin River; this battalion is also buried there. Berkeleyarmy unit 2nd Battalion served with distinction at Ypres ( Belgium) where it earned two battle stars; its members are buried there with full military honors beside First Lieutenant Edwin Ayer who commanded it during that engagement.. On December 10th 1942 UC Davis students walked off campus to protest against US Army troops stationed on campus - these soldiers were later withdrawn after being met by peaceful protesters who distributed Communion Suites among them
