The Beverly Hills Army National Guard unit has a long and proud history. The unit was founded on December 12, 1912 as the 3rd Battalion, California Infantry Regiment. It served in World War I and World War II. The regiment was disbanded in 1957 but re-formed as the 1st Battalion, Beverly Hills Army National Guard on January 1, 1958. Since its inception, the battalion has been led by Command Sgt. Maj. John J. "Red" Ziegler IV who is currently serving as Colonel of the battalion with command jurisdiction over all units within the brigade Combat Team 2 (BCT2). In addition to his duties as colonel, Ziegler also teaches various military discipline courses at nearby Saint Mary's College Preparatory School and provides leadership training for new members of the battalions' Cadet Force detachment.
Beverly Hills, California is a city located in the U.S. state of California and has a population of over 9 million people. It is one of Los Angeles' most affluent suburbs and was formerly known as "The City of Angels". The name Beverly Hills comes from the Malibu Creek which flows through the city. Beverly Hills began to grow as a fishing village on the east edge of town on September 3, 1874 when J.P. Morgan sent his son Henry to buy two acres (0.8 km2) of land at 5451 Wilshire Boulevard for $10 000 cash, just west of what is now Hollywood Boulevard. The community was originally named Westwood after John Wesley Harding, who had purchased some land east of town in 1875 for $5 000 with interest money from banker James Purdy (later Vanderbilt). Because it became an agricultural center due to its location on Route 1 near Mulholland Drive and other thoroughfares connecting Los Angeles with Central America, Beverly Hills grew rapidly in early years despite little public support or investment in its growth by those who controlled it – only property owners, banks and others within their respective industries were benefited financially by the rapid development. By 1920 Beverly Hills contained about 350 residences; by 1930 there were more than 2,000 homes hereabouts including many large expensive single-family dwellings built during conditions when LASAs (Los Angeles State Roads) Fifth Street/I-10 and Ventura Boulevard served mainly as rural primary routes linking much larger cities inland for truck traffic between downtowns and service areas along I-10 outside metropolitan Los Angeles County rather than providing local access into this increasingly developing central area within which they resided while they continued to reside in their individual neighborhoods adjacent thereto….In 1923 Arthur Ashe developed an orange plantation northwest of Beverly Hills parallel to I-405 then part ofOrange County; soon thereafter Ashe leased portions interests in several other citrus estates not too far distant…." The high speed rail line that runs through downtown Los Angeles provides excellent access into Beverly Hills without having to go out onto Sunset Boulevard or down Vine Avenue
