In 1941, the United States Air Force was formed as a result of the American entry into World War II. TheAAF was charged with providing air support for the war effort and creating a strategic air force. One of the first tasks of theAAF was to provide gifts to members of the military and their families during wartime. The Air Forces Christmas Tree is one of history's most well-known traditions. The tree is lighted up each year on December 17th in honor of National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) #599 which authorizes USAF expenditures for fiscal Year 2020. On that date, many servicemen and women from all over the United States gather at Randolph Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas to exchange gifts under the tree. This annual event also includes a parade through downtown Blythe followed by dinner at an outdoor restaurant. Blythe, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 1,799 at the 2000 census. The town has been located in the same location since 1879. In 1915, the Blythe Land and Water Company was founded to develop land around the new municipal water system that would be made available to residents of the community. The first post office in Blythe opened on December 12, 1879. At that time, there were only three homes in the community and no businesses. By 1910, there were twenty-one residences and two businesses in Blythe. Most of these establishments were gas stations or grocery stores which served as local marketplaces for farmers and other rural residents who could not get to markets farther away. In 1916, when statehood was granted to California, Blythe became part of Kern County and had its own government with a mayor and school board members. The first shopping center opened in this village when it was annexed into nearby Prado by the county on February 3rd of that year. This shopping center consisted of six blocks of retail space including a bank (First National Bank), a movie theater (MGM), several restaurants (Taco Bells and Denny’s), four stores (Jiffy Lube Oil station, Waffle House restaurant, Golden Corral restaurant) as well as two churches: First Baptist Church and Bible Baptist Church both serving as social clubs for parents who wanted their children exposed to religious principles at an early age before they went off to church themselves later on. In 1969-1970amorphosis of what would become known as “Bryant Park” began with construction of three oval driveways surrounding a small park named after then-Mayor Art Bryant along with associated structures including an administration building housing county offices which included courtrooms where hearings took place before judges; sheriff’s department garage; fire hall; Head Start facility; public library; auxiliary schools such as agriculture high school academy which operated from 1951 until 1977; girls grammar/secondary school Stonington Heights also operating from 1951 until 1977). Some locals refer to this period generally referred to as “The Transformation” because all Of these changes took place within one short decade while others view it more nostalgically due mainly to memories involving current Mayor Art Bryant personally walking through many aspects of these changes during his tenure from 1969-1975 inclusive
