In 1850, General Winfield Scott ordered the construction of a new army depot in Blythe County to serve as an interim location for troops until a permanent base could be erected in Stockton. The depot was completed in 1852 and named Fort Scott after General Scott’s flagship squadron of dragoons stationed there at that time. In 1861, America entered into a Civil War against Confederate States of America (CSA). The American military played an important role throughout the war, playing both offense and defense while providing supplies and support to brigade-level commands across South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Mississippi and North Carolina. In 1865, after six years of fighting which caused over 600 000 casualties on both sides combined, Union forces emerged victorious and Vicksburg was surrendered by Confederate General Robert E Lee on July 9th 1865. After Vicksburg fell Union forces moved south towards Corinth where they encountered Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest’s forces entrenched around Corinth Lakeknown locally as “The Devil’s Den” due to its difficult access road conditions. On October 15th 1865 Forrest attacked Union lines near Corinth Lake resulting in more than 150 000 casualties including over 50% of all US Army fatalities during World War II alone.
