The history of Blythe can be traced back to 1887 when brothers John and George Blythe founded the town of Blythe on land they had acquired from José Castro for $1. They named their new community after their mother, who had died two years earlier while serving as a missionary in Mexico City. After successful storage experiments, the Bros began growing oranges trees on their farmstead in 1895. By 1916, they were producing 2 million pounds of fruit per year and selling it across Kern County and into Nevada. In 1928, they donated 60 acres (24 hectares) of their property to the city of Blyth for use as a public park; today that parcel includes part of downtown Blyth and portions of both Parkfield Shopping Center and North Park Elementary School. During World War II, Blythe served as an American military base with 1 Army Corps Headquarters stationed there from 1942-1945 before being transferred to Camp Carson near Sacramento where it remained until 1948 when it was decommissioned following the end of World War II. The local economy revived following this time with many businesses established within minutes walking distance of either downtown or Camp Carson – still an important factor today in keeping the town active despite its small size relative to larger metropolises such as Los Angeles or Fresno.
