Blythe is a town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 14,693 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno-Visalia-Pajaro Valley Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white people to arrive in Blythe were prospectors who located gold and silver veins near the site of what is now downtown Blythe on November 12, 1848. They named their discovery after one of their number, British explorer Sir James Hutton. In 1860, Judge Augustus De Forest organized a land grant from Mexico to José Joaquín Vizcaino for $5,000 (). Vizcaino founded the Pajaro Mines Company with capital stock worth $50,000 (). A year later he sold his interest in the company to Jodeef Gabriel Sánchez for $350 (), which established Blythe as an important center for mining operations. A post office was established at Blythe on October 15, 1865 (). The name of the town honor John Culp Fenton (1813-1892), an American lawyer and politician who served as mayor of Los Angeles from 1886 to 1888 and as governor of California from 1893 to 1895.
