Blythe, California is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 30,722 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kern County. Blythe was founded on December 6, 1859 by George Hinkle and named for Nellie Walker Blythe who later donated land to the city. The first post office in Blythe opened on January 1, 1860.
Blythe is a small town in Kern County, California, located about 25 miles southeast of Bakersfield and 50 miles northwest of Fresno. The population was 1,865 at the 2010 census. The first post office in Blythe was established on July 12, 1887. The name was changed to Blythe on December 8, 1895. The first store in the town was opened by James A. Weed on December 7, 1896. In 1907 the community had a population of just 20 people when it incorporated as a village under the name "Blythe." In 1915 it annexed part of Humboldt County and became an unincorporated community again with a population of 100 people. On November 15, 1956, residents of Blythe voted to become an Unincorporated Community again with no Village status because they felt that it would be more difficult to get services from the Town Hall than from their own government. At that time there were only three houses in the Village and no businesses or schools. It wasn't until 1978 when voters approved adding a school system (Kern Valley Elementary School) and two businesses to their community - First National Bank and Golden Leaf BBQ - giving them some semblance of stability finally managing basic needs such as water and electricity hookups for their citizens despite having no Village status whatsoever on their rolls! In 2000-2001 voters added another business - Horizon Credit Union - giving more economic stability to what would have been an struggling Village situation but unfortunately this also brought about annexation by nearby Rancho Viejo which removed much needed residential development within Blythe's borders making it lessvillage-like though still full of friendly locals who are always willing to help out! Today there are 4 properties within Blythse boundaries: Horizon Credit Union building; Presbyterian Church; Holiday Inn Express; & Golden Leaf BBQ place! It seems like even though annexation has taken away much rural agricultural land surrounding our small town center (just outside our city limits), we've never stopped trying hard to maintain thatVillage feeling despite all odds!
