Blythe, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 1,215 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Stockton-Lodi area. The name Blythe comes from two earlier settlements in the area: Bigby and Byers. These names were given to the hills that surrounded the townsite. Blythe is founded on July 14, 1872 by Wm. Hodge and others as a result of ranching operations conducted by James Ahern and his son Omer Ahern. The first post office was established in 1875. Blythe became an incorporated town on December 11, 1912 following passage of the Mayorsville Act which granted local self-government to Kern County residents. The most important economic development in Blythe during its history has been agriculture; however, other industries have also had some success here over time including manufacturing (manufacturing aluminum cans), trucking services (originally run by Pritchett Bros., now JBS Trucking), construction (building shopping centers), and medical care (AMC Cinemas). In recent years, new businesses have begun to open up around town such as a health food store called Gourmet Health & Wellness and a pet grooming business called Pure Naturals kennels; both businesses are located adjacent to each other on Main Street near Parkview Elementary School. There has also been some redevelopment taking place in neighboring communities with mixed results so far but this will continue over time as more people move into these areas looking for their own version of "Aurburn."

Blythe is a small town in California, located 8 miles south of Fresno and 10 miles east of Bakersfield. It was founded on November 15, 1884 by Andrew J. Howland and his wife Lilla Halsey Howland. The Howlands were the first to arrive in the area and homesteaded land that now includes much of what is today Blythe. The post office was established in 1885, and during its early years it was known as Butte County Mail Station #1. In 1895, it became part of Kern County and was renamed Blythe after Mrs. Howland's deceased sister-in-law. Blythe began to grow rapidly due to its strategic location for irrigation agriculture and timber production; during World War II it became an important airbase for the United States military, with several thousand Aircraft manufacturing there including B-29s used in the bombing raids over Japan. After the war ended, many businesses closed but some such as Albertsons grocery store remain until this day.. In recent decades local government has become more decentralized with a mayor/council form instead of a single elected official from each community unit; however public services still continue to be provided by Kern County Government which manages most aspects of life within the small town limits.
