Blythe is a small town in Kern County, California. The population was 1,531 at the 2010 census. It is located about 60 miles (96 km) south of Fresno and 70 miles (113 km) northwest of Bakersfield. The first recorded mention of Blythe was in 1868 when it was called "Buckland" by Captain George Vancouver while he was exploring the area. In 1886, James Irvine settled in what is now Blythe and built his rancho on land that he had acquired from Esequiel Cisneros. From here, Irvine developed a flour mill, sawmill, and other businesses. In 1907, Jitney Ladd opened the first post office in Kern County and named Blythe after himself and his wife Sarah Jane Wiley-Ladd. At that time there were only two hotels in town - one operated by the Ladd family and another by John Gorman who ran a general store. In 1916, Anna Gurley bought 160 acres (60 ha) north of town from her husband Henson Gurley for $10 per acre ($100/ha). She started to develop this land into a farmstead which she named Gurley Farmstead Park after herself and her husband; later she added an additional 20 acres (8 ha) to the park for economic development purposes. The Gurleys donated their home also known as "Gurley's House" to the community for use as a schoolhouse until it burned down in 1951 due to fire damage unrelated to any activity at the park during that year or any other year since its establishment. During World War II some residents served with military Units stationed nearby such as Navy divers trained at UNRISD's Carlsbad Naval Air Station; these individuals are listed on local gravesites within Blythe Cemetery including those of Ray Higham who died October 1945 aged 25 years old while serving with USS Acosta DD 992VP (now USS Chaparral AK 6953), Willis Severson age 21 years old when killed May 1945 aboard USS Sable DD 5609VP1(now USCGC Tacoma CA 92554), Leroy O'Donnell age 22 years old when killed December 1944 aboard USS Triton AE 2222(now HMCS Stockton) . Most notable among these gravesites is that of Guilford Castleman who died February 1945 whilst attached to United States Coast Guard Squadron VF-191VM off Cape Cod’s Provincetown Harbor’s North Channel just before sunset during Operation Neptune’s Spear.. Many others may be unidentified because they are buried within private plots adjacent to homes or on farms not accessible by public access roads

Blythe, California is located in Kern County, California and it was founded on February 14, 1858 by James W. Blythe. The area that now includes Blythe was originally part of the Rancho San Francisco grant given to Juan Jose Cisneros in 1836. At the time of its founding, Blythe consisted of a few scattered residences and a small stream running through it. By 1860, however, the town had come to be home to around 150 people and a school had been built. In 1868, The Western Pacific Railroad came through the area and when it did, business increased so much that a hotel was built on Main Street in 1870. By 1875, there were over 100 businesses in town and more than $6 million worth of merchandise being traded every year. During World War II, Blythe served as an airfield for bomber planes from nearby Davis-Monthan AFB. It also became one of many locations used for housing during the war period; in 1945 alone, 1,500 homes were erected here. In 1961, Blythe was incorporation into the City of Kernville which at that time had only 2 blocks long with just 4 houses total on Main Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue. In 1970-71 (just prior to Genoa Valley), Kernville made national headlines when it decided to build a new shopping center adjacent to its then current library/civic center complex which would house 3 million square feet (~100 hectares) of retail space including 400 stores plus office buildings totaling over 50 stories tall! Today’s city has grown substantially since then with additions such as: additional districts (Southwest Freeway District & Downtown district), Genoa Valley neighborhood growth (in which portions of downtown have been demolished and replaced with highrise developments), numerous cultural institutions (including three movie theaters), etc… Blythe is today known for its diverse culture – both inside and outside of its borders – as well as its strong community spirit which has helped make it an attractive place to live or work. Not only does this population-friendly environment contribute significantly to local economic development but also ensures quality public services are available without sacrificing individual privacy or security while living or working here; something that is especially important in case of natural disasters like earthquakes or floods due to their destructive power!
On July 4, 1849, Blythe became the first incorporated city in California. The city was named after a local creek and its location on the edge of what is now San Bernardino County made it an ideal spot for a new town. The town's population quickly grew as farmers and ranch hands moved into the area to find new land and start anew. By 1861, Blythe had a population of over 100 people and was considered one of the most important towns in San Bernardino County. In 1923, Blythe became part of Riverside County when it was created from parts of San Bernardino and Riverside counties. However, because Riverside County included so much rural territory, it struggled to keep up with the other counties' growth. In 1957, Riverside Countys merged with unified California to form the state of California. As part of this process, Blythe lost its status as an incorporated city but continued to exist as a municipality within California until 1990.
