Brawley, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 7,951 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield metropolitan area. The United States Post Office served Brawley from 1892 until it closed in 2013. The first people to settle in what is now Brawley were Mexican immigrants who arrived in 1847. In 1857, the U.S. government established a fort here and gave land to the Mexican settlers for cattle grazing purposes. A store was built on this site by 1860 and a school was opened in 1861 by Mrs. Julia Cobb Richardson (1805-1875). In 1865, four men named John Fenton, George Humes, Hiram Davenport and Samuel Morse came here looking for new land to farm when they discovered gold near Wacoaluma Creek about 25 miles east of Brawley on US 99 between Butte and Hollister Streets. With this discovery, many other people set up camps along the creek throughout Kern County while others prospected for gold north of Fresno during the next few years. On May 3, 1870 – two days after General Crockett's victory at Palo Alto over Mexico – James Fenton sold 640 acres (2 km²) of his property known as "Fenton Ranch" to Captain Augustus Steele for $5 per acre ($100 per hectare). This ranch became one of the largest cotton farms in California with more than 5 million acres (20 km²) grown from 1840 to 1880!Captain Steele donated his home and holdings here which became known as "Steele House". After Captain Steele's death in 1887 due to yellow fever he bequeathed all his properties including "Fenton Ranch" back to James Fenton’s son-in-law Hiram Jardine Goodloe Sr.. On October 21st 1909 James Fenton died without any children so his land passed into trusteeship under goodloe's daughter Lizzie Goodloe Snively who married John Snively Humes on October 22nd 1911 hast he became trustee alsoher father had conveyed title deeds through her mother Anna Mabel Humes on December 2nd 1893 . The post office called Brawley "Butte" from 1862 until it changed its name to Kernville on November 13th 1898 after Butte got its own post office that year (the old post office continued serving residents of Kernville until 1913). The first people to live in what is now Brawley were Mescalero Apache Indians who came down from Arizona in 1847. They built their villages near present-day Humble and used the area for hunting and gathering. In 1861, Brigham Young's Mormon Battalion (now The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) set up a mission station here called Wagon Wheel Mission Station after wagon wheelshaped trees that grew nearby. In 1876, prospectors discovered gold near Brawley and began coming here for mining operations. By 1890, there were over twenty mines operating in the area with a production rate of about two tons per day! One man known as "Pete" became rich from this gold rush and named his new town Pete's Gold Mines after himself. In 1907, an oil well was drilled by Eureka Oil Company off the coast of Brawley; this led to oil production which helped spur development around town beginning in earnest. Growth continued through World War II when many businesses opened up including truck stops, gas stations and other assorted services during wartime times when resources were scarce all over America due to war efforts. The post-war years saw growth slow as profits dwindled but gradually pick back up again thanks to increased tourism starting in the early 2000s which has driven economic development once again!
