Brawley, California is a small town located in the Central Valley of California. The first Europeans to explore this area were the Spanish in 1821 and they named it San Francisco de Brawley. The first permanent settler in what is now Brawley was Tomás Del Valle who arrived in 1847. At that time there were only a few scattered Native American villages in central California. As development increased, Mission Indians began to arrive from Mexico and other parts of North America starting in the 1850s. By 1870, about 60% of the population was Indian or Alaskan Native American with most of these people living near mission churches and schools that served as social services for their communities. In 1862 an act by Congress changed the name of Brawley to Sacramento County after General Lorenzo Snow’s elevation from lieutenant colonel to general at the Battle of Sacremento Creek which ended United States military involvement in California. Railroad expansion into what is now Brawley started around this time and various businesses sprung up such as a sawmill, groceries, lumberyards and others until World War II when many residents left for military service or because they became casualties of war-related violence like during 1942’s Redwood City bombing campaign which killed more than 30 people including several children).
