Brawley, California is a city in Kern County, California. The population was 24,534 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kern County. The name Brawley comes from the Spanish word "bravo" meaning "gleaming," and refers to its natural resources: copper and gold found near the city and in nearby mountain ranges.
Brawley was founded in 1881 by J.D. Brawley and Wm. H. Johnson as a small town of about eighty residents on the west side of San Joaquin Valley, forty miles south of Fresno. By 1907, Brawley had a population of over two thousand people and was considered one of the most important towns in the valley. The town's growth continued until World War II when it declined precipitously due to factors including the depletion of the local water resources, increased agriculture production, and the spread of Syphilis among migrant workers in nearby agricultural areas. In recent decades, however, some redevelopment has occurred around downtown Brawley which has helped to revive its economy and attract new businesses and residents.

Brawley is a small town in San Bernardino County, California. It is twinned with Riga, Latvia and the two towns have made joint appearances at each other's festivals. The population was 1,871 as of 2010[1]. The first European to arrive in Brawley was José Manuel Nieto on July 12th, 1836. He and his brother Felipe founded the village of Nogales on the banks of the Kern River. In 1838 they bought 6 acres (2 km²) of land from José Gomez, who had homesteaded there earlier that year. The brothers built a cabin and began growing maize and beans. They also started raising cattle and pigs. In 1840 they moved to their present site where they erected a log cabin with 8 rooms and a kitchen/dining room on what is now known as Main Street. From here they took care of their own flour mill which ground cornmeal into meal for sale to local residents until it went out of business in 1906.[2] In 1842 Brawley's first postmaster, Francisco Ortiz arrived from Los Angeles with five wagons filled with goods intended for Independenceville (now Carson City). Ortiz served as postmaster for 17 years before his death in 1865 at the age of 72[3]. His widow Dora Avila continued serving until she died in 1902.[4] On October 5th 1870,[5] Lorenzo Lugo became the first Mexican American to be elected Mayor of Brawley when he ran against incumbent James Fenton Jr.. Lugo won by 2 votes out of 4 cast; he would serve one term before running unsuccessfully for reelection in 1872[6]. During World War II most residents worked on government farms or in munitions factories located nearby but some managed to find work at local logging camps while others did odd jobs around town.[7] After the war ended many people returned home but some continued working on government farms or elsewhere until 1955 when it was announced that all federal lands east of Interstate 10 were being sold off[8]. At this time about 60%of Brawley's population consisted of Anglo-Americans only 20%of whom were Mexican Americans[9][10].
