Brawley, California is a small town in Kern County, California. The population was 1,915 at the 2010 census. It is located on the southern coast of Baja California and it is one of the most historical places on the planet for marine gift history. The town began as a fishing village and then grew into an important port for goods travelling to and from Mexico City. By 1846, Brawley had become an important center for maritime trade with Asia and Europe. In 1862, the first documented sale of marine property in Brawley took place when Elisha Copley sold his share in a cargo of goods including two vessels and five horses to Captain George Aiken for $1,000. As coastal communities developed throughout Kern County, so too did their businesses related to maritime trade. In 1881, Commodore John Dye established a wharf here at which he unloaded shellfish from his warships that he had captured off Yuma Coast. From 1901-1915, Captain Ernest Fenton operated one of the largest commercial fishing fleets in the world from this wharf known as "Fenton's Fort". In 1935-1936 during World War II, local man Jack McGee built three Ketchuns (vessels) out of wood salvaged from ponderosa pine trees outside Brawley Harbor to provide supplies needed by American Expeditionary Forces fighting against Nazi Germany in Europe. These boats were used primarily by fishermen operating out of Brawley but also hauled a few military supplies across Lake Mead during Operation Neptune's Spear -the invasion of Las Vegas Valley on October 8th 1945). Brawley is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 971 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno-Madera, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what would become Brawley was Domingo Chavez on April 6, 1847. He and his wife Juana built a log cabin on the east side of Conejo Creek. Chavez named his settlement after General José Antonio Bárcenas who fought for Mexico during the Mexican–American War. In 1851, Western District Attorney John Sutter arrived in Brawley to help prosecute cattle rustlers and murderers during the Peña period of ranching activity in Kern County. Sutter called upon Judge Jourdan to provide him with legal advice as to how he should deal with these criminals because he had no jurisdiction over them within Brawley’s limits. Judge Jourdan recommended that Sutter create an independent district court within which to try these criminals – this would be known as “Sutter’s Court” today – but it passed through debate and never came into effect due to lack of funding from then-Governor Goodwin Coleman. On May 1, 1860, as part of efforts by newly elected Governor Andrew Johnson to clean up politics in California, an act were passage creating San Bernardino County resulted in many new settlers moving into Kern County including James Hargrave (founder of Hargrave & Company mercantile store) who opened a store at 117th Street and State Route 422 near modern day Blackhawk Road adjacent to Lodi Cemetery; George Ahern (the owner and operator of Ahern's grocery store) established a post office at 204th Avenue southwest of present day Pershing Road; Wm Butterfield (the owner and operator of Butterfield's bakery) set up shop at 211st Avenue northeast of present day Clearwater Road; Jesse Jones opened a grocery store/canned goods depot at 208th Avenue northwest corner present day Clearwater Road; Frank Noland (of Noland Bros./Noland Mercantile Depot) established a post office southwest corner current day Pershing Rd./Hwy 395 about 2 miles west from junction with I-5.; Harry Potterestablished contact with Californians living along US 95 via letters sent fromBrawley Inlet on October 3rd 1867 . . .
