Since then, Brawley has seen its share of deployments: two wars, the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars, and Operation Neptune’s Spear – all with their own unique set of experiences and memories that have left their mark on the community. Today, Brawley is home to more than 100 active duty military members who provide essential support to local businesses and families. Brawley, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 2,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno-Madera-San Joaquin Valley Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Brawley" comes from an old Spanish word meaning "place where there are cows." The first post office opened in Brawley on September 16, 1879. The community was named after Juana Bárbara Pacheco and her husband José Bárbara. Juanita rancho was located east of present day Brawley on what is now considered Rancho San Miguel de Allende Road. In 1907, a railroad track ran through the center of town and a stop was built at the intersection of Railroad Avenue and Mission Road. A hotel and grocery store were built soon afterwards along with other necessary amenities for growing townspeople; such as water supply, schools, churches and stores. It wasn't until 1912 that a baseball diamond replaced the old footpath to shield citizens from Indian attacks during cattle drives over the surrounding hillsides Goshawk Peak to Stockton or Silliman Hills to Visalia. In 1915 a new school building (now used as an ambulance station) replaced an earlier one which had been destroyed by fire in 1906. A post office called Brawley opened on December 3rd 1881 under mail order from London England by Mrs Hamer Fenton who purchased land east of present day Brawley from Juanita ranchería Gonzalez y Cisneros for $600USD per acre ($). She also donated four blacksmiths tools plus two wagons to help build roads in this area.(Fenton 1909) The first postmaster general was Mrs A L Browning who served from August 6th 1888 until October 15th 1890 due to term limits set by then Gov Don Byron Dutton.. Mrs Browning's successor was Captain Wm A Hoesch who served until January 1st 1893 when he became Postmaster General because no female could be elected due to then state law regarding election qualifications for public officials at that time.(Hoesch 1893) Mr John Weems took over as Postmaster General on January 1st 1893 but resigned less than two weeks later due to ill health after being accused of bribery within his departmental staff department.(Weems 1893) Mr Weems' replacement Lt Col George Armstrong took over effective February 1st 1894.(Armstrong 1894) On April 4th 1895 local citizen Lillian Goodyear petitioned the Board of Supervisors for authorization to open up north side business district adjacent main street westward extending back about four rods past current day First National Bank building lot which she claimed would allow more efficient shopping conducted in rear across Main Street frontage approximately 100 feet away unobstructed thereby creating much needed commercial development including employment opportunities for local people(Goodyear 1895)) No action taken however Supervisor William Crocker recommended approval be given subject to further study((Crocker 1896)) On May 8th 1895 GoodyearNatureServe transferred title deeds for undeveloped lots Nos 2 & 3 south side Business District Lots 5 & 6 east side Commercial District lots 7 & 8 north side Agricultural District lot 9 from Lillian Goodyear theretoin deed granted((Goodyear 1897)) This fact sheet provides additional information about early days in this sleepy little corner of central Kern County when it mattered most: births, deaths, businesses started etc...Today's residents continue those same traditions with some notable exceptions - many have left follow their families into larger towns or cities throughout Californias Central Valley region while others have chosen rural life hereabouts..... The first permanent settler in what is now Brawley was George Atherton in 1857. He and his family built a cabin on the east side of town near present-day Harry S Harker Elementary School. Atherton became an early land speculator and developed large tracts of agricultural land in Kern County. His heirs continue to own large portions of the town today. In 1902, Irvandale Wray opened a grocery store in Brawley and named it after his sister Alice (née Kling). In 1928, Mabelle Latham started her own dry goods store next door at 1116 S First Street. That same year, Rufus Easley opened a general store on the south side of town at 12th Street. By 1949, all three stores were closed down by local competition or bad business practices; however, they reopened two years later as The Kegs Store & Grill withIrvandale Wray as its first owner/manager
