Brawley, California is a small town in Kern County, California. The population was 2,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salinas-Tulare-Pitkin Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Brawley were Ohlone Native Americans. A mission called Mission San Francisco de Asís was founded in 1821 by Father José Altamira and Father Gabriel García Márquez, and served as the first permanent Catholic mission in California. In 1847, Mexican traders founded the Aguila Rancho San Rafael on what is now east side of town. The rancho was abandoned around 1856 when it became known that some members of the herd had been poisoned by an Indian war party that had come through the area looking for cattle. In 1886, George Hines laid out a townsite on land he owned near present day Brawley Creek and named it after his maternal grandfather John Hines (1836–1917). Just before World War I, Hines sold most of his holdings to J P Morgan & Co., which renamed it "Morgan City". On October 15, 1923, Brawley citizens applied for incorporation under Californias newly adopted system of government known as "statutory organization" because all local governments were then created through legislation passed by the state legislature rather than being granted automatic recognition as towns or cities by default under prior systems of government. The application process took three years and over 100 ballots; on December 12th 1917 incorporation was granted with 3rd reading followed by ratification on January 7th 1918 (over objections from Mayor William Fenton).

Brawley is a small town in Kern County, California, located about 30 miles east of Bakersfield. The population was 1,595 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield–Visalia Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settlers in what is now Brawley were farmers and their families who arrived in 1847 from New Mexico. A post office was established at Brawley in 1850, and by 1860 it had a population of ten residents. In 1871, a school was built (later renamed Brawley High School) and it served grades Pre-K to 12 until 1976 when it merged with nearby Visalia High School to form Visalia Valley Unified School District #1. In 1924, there were only two homes in the town; all other land was purchased or donated for development purposes. By 1954, over 100 businesses had been erected along Main Street alone and more than 350 people lived in the community including many farmers who raised crops for local markets as well as cattle and pigs that were milked for cheese and bacon products. During World War II, many German prisoners of war were brought into the area to work on farmlands while also serving jail time after being captured during Operation Reinforcement which includedburning down barns and stealing food from farms near Kernville Junction where they disembarked on July 10th 1944 under false identities so as not to draw attention to themselves. Many men lost their lives as a result of this event which still haunts the community today.
