Brawley, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 2,844 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield–Delaware–Ontario Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1892 by J.C. Brawley and his brother-in-law Wm. Fenton as a small stop on the Butterfield Overland Mail route between Los Angeles and San Francisco. The original name of the community was "Bakersfield". In 1896, when it became a city, Brawley renamed it to its current name after General George Custer and his Seventh Cavalry Regiment who fought during the Mexican War at nearby Fort Tejon. In 1984, Brawley established itself as one of the first communities to offer computer services through its own software company called PCM Computing Incorporated which still provides these services today. PCM also manufactures local halogen light fixtures for use in businesses and homes in Brawley and surrounding areas. Brawley is home to several churches including First Baptist Church which has been serving the community since 1898 and Holy Cross Catholic Church which opened its doors in 1913. Brawley was founded in 1868 by George Brawley and his wife, Emma. The town was named for Major General James H. Brawley who fought in the Mexican-American War. The first store in Brawley was opened by George Brawley and his brother, Charles. In 1870, the family moved to a farm on the present site of downtown Brawley. In 1872, George married Sarah Liddle and they started a grocery business with their daughter Eliza. By 1875, the couple had acquired a large tract of land east of town that became known as "The Hill." They continued to operate their grocery store and home until 1902 when they sold their land to Ayer Company for $2,000 cash. From 1903 until 1932, Mrs. Brawley operated her shuttered store from her home on Second Street near Elmwood Cemetery; it reopened as the First Methodist Church after being donated by Mrs. Ayer Company to that purpose in 1933. In 1916-17, Mr. Brawley served as Mayor of Bawdleville during World War I and 1919-20 he served as Alderman from Ward 2 (the current Ward 1). He also represented District 3 (now District 5) in the California State Assembly from 1923 until his death in 1951; he was succeeded by his son Harry Fenton Brawner Jr., who served until 1961.
