In 1865, when the Central Pacific Railroad came through, it connected with Stockton and Fresno, causing an influx of people and businesses to move to Brawley. After World War II, many people left to take up jobs in Greater Los Angeles or other nearby cities. Today, few residents remain in Brawley and most of the buildings date back to the early 20th century. The first person known to live in what is now Brawley was John Butler who settled there around 1849 as part of a group looking for gold on theovierville creek. He built a cabin about two miles west of present day town on a bluff overlooking the creek which he named "Butler's Bluff". It can be seen from Highway 395 just south of town along road number 438A (now called "Hwy 98"). In 1865, when Central Pacific railroad came through, it connected with Stockton and Fresno making an influx of people and businesses into what is now Brawley; this led to its growth over time as more families moved here including some who had come during World War II before returning home after hostilities ended. Brawley is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what would become Brawley was Tom Ladd who arrived in 1873. As early as 1881 there were two businesses in town: one run by H.D. White and the other by Wm. Fenton which traded goods with Nevada and Central California. A post office was established here on September 23, 1886, and mail continued to be delivered through Nevada until it was discontinued in 1907 because of cost overruns with therailroads connection to Los Angeles across the Kern River. In 1912, when Brawley became an incorporated place under state law, it had a population of just over 100 people and consisted of just 12 buildings including the original courthouse which still stands today (although now used for storage). The community's only store opened in 1914 and closed about 30 years later when its owner decided to close up shop due to lack of customers or competition from larger towns around him.. In 1951 Brawley voted to secede from Kern County and become its own municipality (it’s still considered part of Kern County).
