The Brea Air Force Base gift history goes back to the early days of the base. The first gift given at Brea AFB was a new plane. In 1951, an air force colonel bestowed on the base a very special gift- an A-10 Warthog attack aircraft. Brea, California was founded on October 29, 1853 by John Sutter and his wife Mary. The town was named for Brea Adobe in Santa Barbara County, California. It became a city on December 3, 1916. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 66,362. European settlement of the area began in 1821 when Mission San Gabriel Arcangelico was founded by Father José de Alvarado and Blanca Pacheco. A small group of Spanish settlers from Baja California crossed the Russian River at Sutter's Fort on January 24, 1823 and landed near what is now Brea. They were led by Gaspar de Portolá and Manuel Nieto. In 1825 Juan Bautista Aguirre discovered gold along the southern coast of present-day Ventura County. This discovery stirred up interest in land over south of Los Angeles because it would provide valuable access to salt water shipping lanes that could be used to transport goods to China and other parts of Asia. On November 20, 1827 Mexican Governor Francisco Kieffer authorized Captain José Crespo to explore claims north of San Fernando Valley for Mexico City at current day Claremont Boulevard in Garden Grove. The first settler in what is now Brea arrived on horseback on October 29, 1853 from Santa Clara County with families led by Captains Isidro Gomez and Vicente Huerta de la Carrera; they traveled down Highway 91 from San Jose through Amador Valley before reaching their destination at Gaviota Hill (now part of Yorba Linda). Seventy-eight people made the journey across country – ten more than originally planned due to an illness brought about by severe cold weather conditions as they rode into winterquarters about 25 miles northwest of today’s town center on October 28th - including future mayors Antonio Villaraigosa (1911-1913) and Bob Hope (1945-1948) . For many years after coming ashore there were few permanent residents because most people thought farming would be easier farther inland where there were more trees or rivers available for irrigation purposes However during President Franklin D Roosevelt's administration Agricultural Adjustment Act which raised prices for crops while limiting production resulted in increased immigration bringing many farmers with them who started ranches or vineyards eastward into eastern Ventura County creating a need for housing development beyond what had been available when men first came ashore Thereafter annexation followed thru annexation processes until 1959 when Brea became an unincorporated community withinBrea City limits
