Brea, California was founded in 1853 by brothers John and Joseph Brea. The town was named after their mother, who was of Italian descent. The Breas were the first to settle in what would becomeBrea, and they opened a general store and post office in the town. By 1855, Brea had a population of around 50 people. In 1865, another brother, George Brea, started trading goods from his rancho (land grant) at present-day Chula Vista for goods brought overland by the Mormon pioneers. This trade led to the development of downtown Brea as a commercial center with banks and grocery stores lining Main Street. In 1886, John Breen established a mill on the San Fernando River near downtown Brea which became one of California's leading industries.
