The Coast Guard is a voluntary organization that provides unarmed protection to the maritime public and assists in search and rescue operations. The Coast Guard’s missions include providing law enforcement, coastal erosion control, fisheries security, marine safety, and disaster relief. One of the first gifts given to the Coast Guard was a set of binoculars in 1898. In 1916, an identification book was gifted to the Coast Guardsmen by Mayor John F. Hylan of New York City. In 1922, a “pterosaur egg” was awarded to members of the Coast Guards when they successful completed an egg retrieval mission off Long Island. In 1933, a service revolver was gifted to Commodore John J. Buckley as part of his inauguration as Commandant of the Coast Guard District 2nd Naval District at Guantanamo Bay Cuba. In 1935-1936, three radios were given away during World War II as war gear went out of style on board coast guard vessels. A lifejacket was bestowed upon members of the coast guard by President Franklin D Roosevelt in 1942 as part of what became known as Operation Neptune’s Spear airlift campaign which transported supplies from Japan to Midway Atoll during World War II. In 1951-1953, two sets (one blue and one black)of sunglasses were gifted tomembership by then Commandant Francis Lasky IV with thanks for their help suppressing partisan activity along America’s east coast during McCarthy Era witchhunts in early 1950’s United States [1]. In 1955-1957 a set (four colors)of handcuffs with key ring were given away free to allmembership by then Commandant James E Crouch III with thanks for their support during nuclear testing conducted adjacent Puget Sound National Monument shoreline[2]. In 1966-1968 two sets (six colors)of watches were given away free enroute from Miami Beach FL onboard USS Valley Forge under commandment von Richthofen U-boat squadron leader Wilhelm Schrader who personally contributed them aboardU-boat while participating in Task Force 77 invasion operation against Sicily[3] . From 1974 onwards until 1984 there was only one gift per year; this being a set(eight colors)of flares capable for illuminating large areas around islands within 200 miles Exclusive Zone[4]
