Brea, California is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 66,599 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Los Angeles County. It is located on the eastern edge of the San Fernando Valley and has a Mediterranean climate. The first Europeans to visit Brea were Spanish traders in 1769. The area now known as Brea was part of Rancho Franciscan de los Olivos, named for Franciscan missionary Juan Francisco Orozco y Pacheco. In 1821, Brea became an independent town under Mexican rule when Rancho Santa Anita was sold to an American concessionaire. By 1848, all Missionary Land had been acquired by private citizens and it became part of what is now Orange County. A year later, Brea voted to become an incorporated municipality with a mayor and council system under Mexican law rather than operate as a single town subject to the government of Orange County. In 1850, Brea passed its own land Act which granted ownership of plots of land east of Hollywood Boulevard to several prominent individuals including brothers Charles Wohlgemuth and Otto Preminger Sr.. Brea's heyday as a mining community came during the late 19th century when gold was discovered in nearby Whitney Creek near present-day Glendale and other deposits were discovered at Saugus Mines (now Saugus) and Anza Fields west of downtownBrea between 1884 and 1888; however these investments failed to produce any significant revenue or gold production despite large investment costs incurred by prospectors bidding against each other for access to this rich mineral field. After years of litigation over title to these fields from various claimants including local farmers who had worked them out before their annexation intoBrea by City Hall in 1907…..the last major discovery at Anza Fields resulted in $1 million worth grossed off by prospectors leasing mineral rights from drillers working those fields prior to annexation on October 1st 1912…….,the dry catacombs beneath[Anza Fields] have long been considered one Of The Mostsignificant Archaeological Discoveries Made In Southern California

In 1821, the twin towns of Oso and Brea were incorporated as one city under the name "Oso". The name change was because it was decided that there would be no annexation by Los Angeles untilBrea had its own government. By 1872, Brea had a population of 10,000 people and became an independent city under the leadership of Mayor John Sutter. During World War II, Brea played an important role in the Battle for Des Moines Bay which helped turn the tide against Japan. Afterward, many businesses owners took advantage of wartime shortages to start up again post-war America. In 1957, Proposition 14 was passed which led to Measure J being adopted that set forth plans for downtown redevelopment including a new freeway interchange and extensive reclamation projects for much ofthe central area between Elmira Street and Ontario Boulevard (now Vermont Avenue). This program began in 1958 and ended just shyof 20 years later with approval from voters when Measure K came into effect on November 5th 1978 replacing Prop 14 with moreconservative plans calling for only limited development downtown while large tracts along I-10 remained undeveloped or used for agricultural purposes only
