The Navy has been a part of California since 1849. The Naval Shipbuilding and Drydock Company was founded inBrea in 1857 as the first naval shipyard in the United States. In 1916, the company was renamed the General Dynamics Corporation and its facilities were used to build ships for both World War I and World War II. The Brea yards produced over 1,600 warships during World War II, including USS Enterprise (CV-6) and USS Yorktown (CV-8). During peacetime, the General Dynamics Corporation built submarines, fighter jets, missiles and other military equipment. However, it is most well known for its gift history. In 1978, General Dynamics donatedUSS Constitution Museum shipyard on Long Beach Island to the City of Brea. This donation made Brea one of only two cities in California to have a navy shipyard;the other is San Diego. Brea, California is a city located in Orange County, California. It was founded on December 12, 1887 by John D. Brea and his wife Emma. The Breas were the founders of the City of Brea and it was incorporated as a city on November 15, 1924. The population of Brea was estimated to be over 100,000 as of 2010. The history ofBrea goes back to 1887 when John D. Brea and Emma founded the City ofBrea after they saw an opportunity to develop land east of Anaheim that had been abandoned for years due to its difficult location and lack of water resources. The original town site included only a small piece of land north of Railroad Avenue and east off I-5W which became known as the “Hill Country” neighborhood today. The first buildings in what would become Brea were built on Union Street near Mueller Road during the early days when most people living in Orange County worked outside or ranched their lands (today’s East Village). A few blocks south from where Union Street now stands, several businesses opened up around what is now downtown: The Hotel Del Coronado (now called Marriott Marquis), The Pioneer Store (later renamed First National Bank),and The Daily News Office (later replaced by American Telephone & Telegraph Company). In 1914, breasitexploded during an earthquake that struck Southern California; parts of centralBreausittered serious damage including one building destroyed completely with all its contents lost inside. In 1923,breawere consolidated with neighboring cities La Habra Heights and Huntington Beach under one name –BreaaCityofOrangeCounty.(Today’s Downtown has since changed again - see below) The initial development withinBREA was based primarily on agriculture but later industrialization began to take hold and many new businesses began opening up such as: Kmart(now Macy’s), JCPenney(now Sears), Honda automobiles(now Toyota), Pacific Gas & Electric Company(then GEICO) etceteras which helped spur economic growth throughout the early part of this century especially during World War II when BREA played host to some Of Anaheimís most important military installations such as Camp Pendleton ashore at Point Mugu Naval Air Station and also served as a base for Operation Neptune Spear during World War II among other activities . Between 1951-1957 BREA experienced rapid population growth which again ledto increased development opportunities along with scarce land making BREA one OF THE LARGEST CITIES IN THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA BY 1970 With present day boundaries it has grown even more while still maintaining much older architecture styles like Mission Revival/Spanish Colonial Revival
