The first Europeans to visit Brentwood were Spanish traders in 1812 who camped there while exploring San Bernardino County. In 1870–71, local entrepreneur James Fenton built a housing development that now includes much of downtown Brentwood. Fenton founded one of the first large sodalities (professional organizations) in America with six members: The American Bible Society (1872), The Mutual Aid Societies (1876), The Chamber Of Commerce (1878), The Odd Fellows (1879), and The Knights Of Columbus (1881). He also developed THE RIVERIDE – a new shopping mall that opened in 1984 – which anchored what is now known as Westfield Center #1 Shopping Center east of I-10 between Olympic Boulevard and Bakewell Road/Hollywood Freeway
Brentwood was founded in 1887 by two surveyors, George Brent and Lewis H. Brent. The town was named for Colonel John Fenton, a landowner who donated the land for the town. Brentwood was first known as a small farming community with only a few homes. In 1910, the first high school opened in Brentwood and it served grades 9-12. In 1916, Brentwood became an incorporated city and began to grow into its current size. In 1954, the first air traffic control tower was built in Brentwood and it has been serve as the center of local aviation since then. In 2002, the City of Brentwood dedicated a new park called Woodbine Park to commemorate the history of Brentwood and its residents.
