Brentwood is a city in San Joaquin County, California, United States. The population was 56,898 at the 2010 census. Brentwood is located about 20 miles (32 km) east of Stockton and 50 miles (80 km) southeast of Sacramento. It lies on the eastern edge of the Kern River Valley and has a total area of 24 square miles (64 sq km). The first recorded mention of Brentwood was in 1795 when it was part of Rancho San Antonio de Bexar. In 1846, the town site was patented to Captain George Hearst by his wife Mariana Angeles. At that time, Brentwood consisted only of a few homes and an Indian village known as Bexar Mission had been abandoned near where it now stands. In 1851, Captain Hearst sold most of what would become Brentwood to Daniel Winton who built up a large ranch here including much significant architecture including Winton's Hotel which still stands today. Just before he died in 1865, Winton bequeathed $10,000 to build a school for girls in what is now downtown Brentwood. In 1870 Captian John Harker laid out streets which became Present-day 4th Street between Fearnley and Atherton Streets In 1877 William Dawson laid out 3rd Street between Atherton and Fearnley Streets which became Broadway today
