Brentwood, California is a city located in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles County, California. The population was 122,495 as of 2010. It is the third most populous city in Los Angeles County and the most populous city east of the Bay Area. Brentwood is also home to two campuses of UCLA and USC. The first Europeans to visit what is now Brentwood were Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and his crew on their ill-fated attempt to sail from Mexico City to Santa Catalina Island in 1542. On October 29, 1853, American Commodore John D. Sloat discovered land that would become Brentwood when he sighted it from USS Constitution while sailing between San Francisco and Monterey Bay. That day, Captain James Cook named it Mount Good Hope after General George Armstrong Custer's battle at Little Big Horn in 1868. The name "Brentwood" was given by Captain John Atherton who visited during his surveying expedition in 1792-93 along with Lt.-Gen Sir Richard Owen and Capt David Baird (future 1st Baronet). In 1857–58 an Act for public purposes was passed which organized what are now three wards within Los Angeles County: First Ward (northwest corner of West 3rd Street and South Grand Avenue), Second Ward (southwest corner of North Grand Avenue and East Ninth Street), Third Ward (west section lying west of East Ninth Street between Olive Branch Road and Manchester Boulevard). This act divided what are now Beverly Hills, Malibu Canyon Village, Bel Airoperative Park #2 & #3 in Van Nuys northward extension; Downey Center southward extension; Napanee Township northeast extension; Menifee Borough southeast extension into which Downey Center had been annexed; all these developments being under one single control until 1901 when each ward became its own independent municipality through special legislation enacted by the Legislature entitled "An Act for organizationof certain parts ofLos Angeles County." In 1861 an Act providing for mail service between cities was passsed by Congress with US Postmaster General Darius Noyes as its Authorizer making Blanding Park post office within boundaries established bymail order from those living near Pasadena on March 4th 1861 In 1903 a fire destroyed much property including part of what is now Brentwood before starting any real growth there until World War I when some new homes were built there . After World War I Brentwood experienced a rapid growth due largely to black migration from Watts Estates eastward into central Brentwoods neighborhoods such as Elmhurst Avenue & Hawthorne Boulevard where they started blocks long before white people did . Thereafter annexation began occurring throughout eastern portions including Downey Heights eastward annexation occurred on May 1st 1928 following approval by a unanimous vote of both houses Of the State Legislature followed by proclamation From Governor Thomas Pyle
